FINAL - Barnstormers 43, River Kings 18

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers jumped out to a 27-6 halftime lead and held off the Cedar Rapids River Kings en route to a 43-18 win tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
In completing the sweep of the River Kings this season, the Barnstormers improved to 8-1 on the season; one game behind the Arizona Rattlers in the IFL standings. The Rattlers, 8-0, defeated the Nebraska Danger 56-46 tonight in Phoenix. Cedar Rapids has now lost seven straight and fell to 1-9 with the loss.
Iowa defeated Cedar Rapids in both of their previous matchups; 41-20 on March 30 and 59-48 on April 6.
Iowa went up 6-0 early in the opening quarter on a 20-yard run from Daquan Neal, and increased their lead to 13-0 with Neal's 15-yard pass to Jazeric Peterson with four minutes left in the quarter. Cedar Rapids got on the board late in the quarter on a 36-yard field goal from Phillip Nwosu. The Barnstormers led 13-0 at the end of one.
The Barnstormers increased their lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Neal to Jamal Tyler a minute and a half into the second quarter. Nwosu drew the River Kings to within two scores with a 31-yard field goal midway through the quarter. Neal found Connor Hollenbeck for a two-yard touchdown as time expired in the half, and the Barnstormers led 27-6 at the intermission.
The teams traded scores in the third quarter. Neal found Ryan Balentine for a 29-yard touchdown with just under nine minutes to go in the quarter. Cedar Rapids scored their first touchdown of the game at the 6:51 mark of the third when Ben Wilkerson hit Jordan Smith for 14 yards. Iowa took a 34-12 lead into the final quarter.
Cedar Rapids closed the gap to 16 points on a three-yard run with 12:24 remaining. Iowa answered on a five-yard run from Malik Brown. The Barnstormers added a safety late to provide for the 25-point margin of victory.
The Barnstormers amassed 255 yards of total offense to 149 for the River Kings. That included 180 passing yards to the River Kings' 75. The River Kings were penalized eight times for 40 yards and the Barnstormers were flagged six times for 34 yards.
Neal finished 16 of 26 for 180 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed six times for 42 yards and a score. Brown gained 28 yards off six carries with a score. Balentine caught seven passes for 103 yards, while Peterson added five catches for 43 yards and a touchdown. Treyvon Willams recorded 11 tackles and a sack to lead the Iowa defense. Jeremy Gloston, Tyrell Pearson and Tevin Madison each had an interception.
Wilkerson made his second start in place of Kurt Palandech, who was tending to a family medical issue. Wilkerson completed eight of 19 passes for 93 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. He rushed 10 rimes for 39 yards and a score. Nathaniel Chavious gained 35 yards off six carries. Smith had four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
The Barnstormers are back at home next week as they host the Quad City Steamwheelers on May 11 with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The River Kings have a bye next week. They are back in action on May 17 as they visit the Steamwheelers. Kickoff in that one is set for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
