PHOENIX, AZ - It wasn't always pretty, but the result is what counts.
The Arizona Rattlers held off the Nebraska Danger 56-46 to improve to a perfect 9-0 tonight at Talking Stick Resort Arena. The Rattlers stand alone atop the IFL standings, a game ahead of the 8-1 Iowa Barnstormers. Iowa tonight completed a 3-0 season sweep of the Cedar Rapids River Kings with a 43-18 win in Des Moines. The top two seeds at the end of the regular season will receive a bye in the opening round of the playoffs and will host a conference championship game.
The Danger fell to 5-5 with the loss. This was the only meeting between the teams this season.
It was a defensive battle in the first quarter, with the teams deadlocked at 0-0 after the first 15 minutes.
Arizona struck first on a three-yard run from Jamal Miles eight seconds into the second quarter, but the Danger came right back on a 10-yard pass from Tommy Armstrong, Jr. to Johnny Jackson IV to knot the score at 7-7. Drew Powell's six-yard pass to Jarrod Harrington put the Rattlers up 14-7 at the 3:10 mark of the quarter. They extended the lead with 57 seconds left on Miles' eight-yard run. Davonte Sapp-Lynch returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards for a touchdown, but the Rattlers were able to go into halftime up 28-14 on a three-yard run from Harrington.
Sapp-Lynch's 13-yard run drew the Danger to within a touchdown two minutes into the third quarter. Arizona twice on a pair of runs from Powell of seven and 18 yards to extend the lead to 42-20. Armstrong rushed in from 14 yards out late in the quarter to make cut into the lead. Arizona entered the fourth quarter with a 42-26 advantage.
Nebraska scored on a 17-yard pass from Armstrong to Jackson, and on a nine-yard pass from Armstrong to Eric Thomas to trim Arizona's lead to 42-38 with 11 minutes left in the fourth. Powell's four-yard run put the Rattlers up by 11 midway through the quarter, but Armstrong countered for the Danger with a 27-yard run with 4:39 left. Powell provided a cushion when he hit Miles for a 15-yard touchdown. with two minutes remaining.
Powell, last season's IFL Most Valuable Player as he lead the Barnstormers to a United Bowl title, was making his debut in a Rattlers uniform after being signed by the team 10 days ago.
The Rattlers held an edge in total offense 281 yards to 268 for the Danger. That included a 27-yard advantage in the passing game. Nebraska was penalized five times for 66 yards and Arizona was flagged three times for 19 yards.
Jeff Ziemba got the start for Arizona, but Powell came into the game late in the first quarter. Powell completed eight of 10 passes for 96 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed 11 times for 63 yards and a score. Darrell Monroe, making his third appearance of the season for the Rattlers, rushed for 26 yards and caught six passes for 86 yards. Miles and Harrington each had four grabs for 46 and 26 yards, respectively. Allen Chapman recorded two interceptions, while Dillon Winfrey had one. Davontae Merriweather had a sack.
Armstrong went nine of 19 for 132 yards with three touchdowns and three picks. He also rushed eight times for 73 yards and a pair of scores. Jackson had four receptions for 63 yards with two touchdowns, and Thomas caught three balls for 40 yards and a touchdown. Robert Haynes led the Danger defense with 10 tackles. Chris Martin had a sack and Najee Bright had an interception.
Both teams are on byes next week, but return in week 13. The Danger will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on May 18 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m.. The Rattlers will be in San Diego to take on the Strike Force on May 19 at 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
