GREEN BAY WI - Kezlow Smith's three-yard touchdown pass from Lenorris Footman with 2:50 remaining proved to be just enough cushion for the Green Bay Blizzard as they held off the Bismarck Bucks for a 48-39 win tonight at the Resch Center.
The Blizzard improved to 6-3 with the win and remain in sole possession of fourth place through 11 weeks of Indoor Football League play. The top six teams make the playoffs. The Bucks, who came in having won two straight, fell to 2-9.
The teams will meet again on June 1 as the Blizzard head to Bismarck to face the Bucks in their home arena.
Rameses Owens' one-yard run put Green Bay up midway through the opening quarter. Bismarck countered with a 13-yard run from quarterback John Gibbs a couple of minutes later. The teams were locked in a 6-6 tie at the end of one.
The Blizzard scored nine seconds into the second quarter on a three-yard run from Keshawn Taylor. The Bucks then scored twice in a four-minute span. First was a three-yard run from Mike Tatum and then on a two-yard run from Gibbs and the Bucks held a 20-14 lead with five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Blizzard reeled off four straight touchdowns in the second and third quarters. They tied it at 20 apiece with a 30-yard pass from Footman to Levi Copelin, then they good a 27-20 lead with five seconds remaining in the first half on Footman's one-yard pass to B.J. Hill.
Green Bay kept things rolling in the third, scoring on a 27-yard scamper from Footman, then taking a 41-20 lead with Owens rushed in from 10-yards out. The Bucks stopped the bleeding on the last play of the third with a six-yard pass from Gibbs to Alex Wheat, Jr. The Blizzard led 41-20 heading into the final quarter. Bismarck scored on a rouge to open the fourth. Mike Tatum's three-yard run cut the deficit to eight points at the 9:35 mark of the quarter. They pulled to within two at 41-39 with 7:04 left on Gibbs 19-yard pass to Frederick Abraham. Green Bay was able to all but seal it with Footman's late touchdown to Smith.
The Blizzard held a slight advantage in total offense, 254 yards to 238. They had 119 rushing yards to the Bucks' 86. Bismarck was penalized 11 times for 84 yards and the Bucks were flagged seven times for 60 yards.
Footman completed eight of 14 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed eight times for 58 yards and a score. Owens had nine carries for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Hill and Copelin each had two receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown. Silverberry Mouhon led the Blizzard defense with 11 tackles, and Deldrick Canty recorded a sack.
Gibbs went 16 of 21 for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed eight times for 37 yards with two trips to the end zone. Tatum gamed 18 yards on four carries with two scores. Wheat caught five passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, while Abraham had four grabs for 47 yards with a score. Brandon Henrie had six tackles for the Bucks' defense and Jammeron Johnson recovered a fumble.
Green Bay is back in action next week as they travel to Sioux Falls to meet the Storm on May 11 for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Bismarck has a bye next week, but will return to action on May 18 to host the Tucson Sugar Skulls. Kickoff in that one is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
