FINAL - Sugar Skulls 65, Strike Force 48

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Tucson Sugar Skulls outscored the San Diego Strike Force 21-7 in the fourth quarter to secure a 65-48 win in the fourth and final meeting between the teams tonight at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
Tucson and San Diego had met three previous times this season. The Sugar Skulls won all three meetings. There was a 65-44 win in their first meeting at San Diego on March 11, then a 51-31 win on March 21 at Tucson. The third meeting was a 54-34 win for the Sugar Skulls on May 4.
The Sugar Skulls moved into a tie with Nebraska Danger at 5-5 on the season. Nebraska owns the tiebreaker due to having beaten Tucson earlier this season. The Strike Force fell to 1-9. Tucson's win completes a sweep of the season series against the Indoor Football League's 2019 expansion teams.
Tucson scored first on a three yard run from Mike Jones, but the extra point was missed. San Diego came right back with a seven yard run from QB Jihad Vercher. Tucson scored two straight touchdowns. The first was an eight yard pass from Jake Medlock to Malique Belfort and the second was a 28 yard pass from Medlock to Jones. San Diego scored on a 15 yard pass from Vercher to Marques Rodgers. The Sugar Skulls led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter.
San Diego took a 21-20 lead on run from Vercher after an eight play, 48 yard drive. Tucson scored on a one-yard run from Medlock and scored again on a 31 yard field goal from Josh Gable with eight seconds left in the first half. The Strike Force hit a 53 yard field goal from Ernesto Lacayo on the last play of the half. Tucson led 30-24 at halftime.
San Diego had the ball first in the second half and took a 31-30 lead on a 20 yard pass from Vercher to Dominique Carson. Tucson scored on a three yard run from Matt Behrendt who came in to relieve Medlock at the beginning of the half. Julian Stafford caught a 35 yard touchdown from Vercher to put the Strike Force up 38-37. Tucson took the lead again on a three yard pass from Behrendt to Jeremiah Harris. Lacayo hit a 45 yard field goal for the Strike Force, but Tucson led at the end of the third quarter 44-41.
Tucson scored on am eight yard pass from Behrendt to Rico Brown which put the Sugar Skulls up 51-41 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. A one yard run from George Moreira, Jr. pulled San Diego to within three points, but those would be the last points the Strike Force would score. Behrendt threw an eight yard touchdown to Rico Brown, and Mike Jones scored on a seven yard run with 49 seconds left to seal the win for Tucson.
Tucson had 247 yard of total offense compared to 254 for San Diego. The Strike Force had a slight edge in passing and the Sugar Skulls held a slight edge in rushing. San Diego had nine penalties for 87 yards and Tucson had four for 20 yards.
Behrendt and Medlock each threw for 68 yards and combined to complete 17 of 20 passes and five touchdowns. They also each rushed for a touchdown. Jones rushed for 50 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Brown caught two touchdown passes. Micah Eugene, Jr. had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery for Tucson. Rayshawn Henderson had a sack and an interception.
Vercher threw for 160 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and ran for a touchdown. Stafford, Rodgers and Carson each has touchdown catches for San Diego. Ralph Harvey, Jr. had 15 tackles and Tyler Thornton has 10. Sergio Phillips had a sack for San Diego.
Tucson will visit the Bismarck Bucks on May 18 at 4:05 p.m. San Diego will host the Arizona Rattlers on May 19 at 5:05 p.m.. Times listed are pacific.
