FINAL - Steamwheelers 48, River Kings 29

MOLINE, IL - It wasn't always by the book, but when the clock hits 0:00, the most important thing is to come away with the win.
The Quad City Steamwheelers accomplished just that, downing the Cedar Rapids River Kings, 48-29 tonight at TaxSlayer Center. The Steamwheelers improved to 4-7 on the season and kept within striking distance in the playoff race. The River Kings, who have dropped eight straight, fell to 1-10.
The Steamwheelers completed the season sweep against the River Kings. Quad City won the first match up, 58-36, on March 15 in Cedar Rapids.
Quad City drove down into the red zone on the game's opening drive, but were forced to settle for a 19-yard field goal from Jacob Stytz. After a long missed field goal attempt from Cedar Rapids, the Steamwheelers scored on a four-yard run from wide receiver Keyvan Rudd. The Steamwheelers led 10-0 at the end of one.
The River Kings got on the board just over four minutes into the second quarter on Phillip Nwosu's 19-yard field goal. Rudd's four-yard touchdown catch from E.J. Hilliard put the Steamwheelers up 17-3 midway through the quarter. They followed that up with a 25-yard strike from Hilliard to Carlos Wiggins. Nathaniel Chavious returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards for the River Kings first touchdown of the game, but the extra point attempt was no good due to a bad snap. Quad City scored just before the end of the half on a 23-yard field goal from Stytz, and the Steamwheelers led 27-9 at the break.
Cedar Rapids scored on the opening possession of the second half on a 15-yard pass from backup quarterback Dalton Oliver to Jordan Smith to pull the River Kings to within 27-16. Following newly signed Samuel Mabany's fumble recovery of a bad snap by the Steamwheelers, Cedar Rapids was back in business. They wasted little time taking advantage as Oliver hit Smith from 12-yards out, cutting the Steamwheelers' lead to 27-23 at the 8:09 mark of the third. That score would last through the end of the quarter.
The Steamwheelers scored a minute into the final quarter on a six-yard run from Zavier Steward to increase the lead back to 11. The Steamwheelers forced a turnover on downs and drove to the six yard line; from there scoring on a six-yard pass from Hilliard to Wiggins. The River Kings responded on the next play from scrimmage, a 23-yard pass from Oliver to Marquel Wade, and the Steamwheelers' lead was 12 at 41-29 with 4:02 left in the quarter. Hilliard's seven-yard run with 2:30 left accounted for the final score of 48-29.
Quad City gained 251 yards of total offense to 152 for Cedar Rapids. The Steamwheelers held advantages of 56 yards in the passing game and 43 yards in the rushing game. The River Kings were penalized nine ties for 78 yards, while the Steamwheelers were flagged six times for 43 yards.
Hilliard, the IFL's leading passer, went 15 of 23 for 199 yards with three touchdowns. Wiggins finished with four receptions for 84 yards and two scores, and Rudd had three receptions for 27 yards with a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown. La'Kel Bass had seven tackles to lead the Steamwheelers' defense. Thailand Pierce has a sack and Danzel McDaniel recorded an interception.
Oliver replaced Ben Wilkerson in the second quarter. He showed promise, completing 11 of 21 passes for 118 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. Wade finished with four receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown, while Smith had two touchdown catches off four catches for 41 yards. Jason Gibson's six tackles led the River Kings defense, while Mabany recorded two tackles for loss and recovered a fumble.
Quad City will visit the Nebraska Danger on May 24 at 5:05 p.m. Cedar Rapids has a bye next week and will return to action on June 1 as they host the Arizona Rattlers. All times listed are pacific standard time.
