FINAL - Sugar Skulls 52, Bucks 40
5/18/19 --
BISMARCK, ND - The Tucson Sugar Skulls scored twice in the final minute and defeated the Bismarck Bucks, 52-40 tonight at Bismarck Event Center.
Leading 42-40 at the one-minute warning, Josh Gable hit a 26-yard field goal. After Mike Jones' fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff, Matt Behrendt found a wide-open Jeremiah Harris for a 30-yard score to go up by 12. A late rally by the Bucks was thwarted by Edward Burns' interception of John Gibbs pass in the end zone to seal the road win for the Sugar Skulls.
Tucson moved to 6-5 with the win and took possession of fifth place in the Indoor Football League standings; one game ahead of the Nebraska Danger, which lost in the last second to the Sioux Falls Storm tonight, 57-56. Bismarck, which fell to 2-8, saw their playoff hopes to dwindle to mathematical improbabilities.
The win completes a season sweep of the Bucks for the Sugar Skulls. Tucson clipped Bismarck 62-42 on March 9 in Tucson.
The Sugar Skulls struck first on a 20-yard scamper from Mike Jones. On the Bucks' next possession, they were forced to settle for a 45-yard field goal from Cody Barber. The Sugar Skulls extended the lead back to 11 two-and-a-half minutes later on Medlock's seven-yard score to Jones. The Bucks answered on a 17-yard pass from Gibbs to Eric Lauderdale at the 4:20 mark of the quarter, and added a point on a rouge on the ensuing kickoff. Medlock hit Harris for seven yards, the Bucks added three points on a 32-yard field goal from Barber as time expired in the first half. The Sugar Skulls led 35-28 at the break.
Gibbs' one-yard run midway through the third was the only scoring of the quarter. Barber's extra point, however, sailed wide left and the Bucks trailed by a point, 35-34, at the end of three.
Bismarck took a 37-35 lead early in the fourth when Barber hit from 25 yards out, but the Sugar Skulls went back up on a two-yard run from Behrendt with just under 12 minutes to go. Barber's fourth field goal of the night, an 18 yarder, pulled the Bucks to within two at 42-40 with 4:55 remaining, setting up Tucson to put away the game in the last minute.
The Sugar Skulls amassed 250 yard of total offense to 161 for the Bucks. That included an advantage of 53 yards in the rushing game. Bismarck was penalized 11 times for 65 yards, while Tucson was flagged five times for 30 yards.
