FINAL - Storm 57, Danger 56
5/18/19 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Brandon Sheperd's two-yard run on the final play was just enough to lift the Sioux Falls Storm past the Nebraska Danger tonight at Denny Sanford Premiere Center, 57-56.
Down 56-51, the Storm had the ball with four seconds and it appeared a pass into the end zone was broken up by the Danger defense, but a pass interference penalty gave the Storm new life and the ball at the two-yard line, which is when ran it in for the game winner.
Sioux Falls kept pace in the race for a first round bye in the playoffs with the win, improving to 9-2 on the season. Should the Storm win their final three games, including a week 16 match up against the Iowa Barnstormers in Des Moines, they will likely earn the second seed, which comes with a week off in the first round and a home date in the semifinals.
Nebraska, which fell to 5-6, are now in sixth place and would be in position to make the post-season if they hold that position or improve on it. The top six teams in the standings make the IFL playoffs. The Danger are a game back of the Tucson Sugar Skulls, which defeated the Bismarck Bucks tonight, 52-40. They also are just a game up on the Quad City Steamwheelers and can clinch a playoff spot next week with a win over the Steamwheelers in Grand Island.
It was the second of two meetings between the teams this season. The Storm defeated the Danger 55-36 on March 9 in Nebraska.
The Storm went up 7-0 on their first drive as Brown hit Kent Shelby for a 12-yard touchdown. The Danger tied it midway through the first quarter on an eight-yard run from Quincy Walden. Calen Campbell of the Storm returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for a touchdown and Sioux Falls was back up by a touchdown. Tommy Armstrong, Jr. ran in from a yard out to knot the score at 14-14 late in the first quarter.
Brown hit Shelby for a 19-yard touchdown, but the Danger came right back on a six-yard run from Eric Thomas. Brown countered with a two-yard plunge to give the Storm a 28-21 lead with 5:18 left in the second. Armstrong's eight-yard run two minutes later nearly evened the score, but his rush for the two-point conversion failed and Sioux Falls was up 28-27. The Storm scored with 48 seconds left in the half on a 53-yard field goal from Parker Douglass to increase their lead to four points. Just 32 seconds later, Armstrong found Thomas for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Danger their first lead at 34-31, which they took into halftime.
The Danger had the ball first in the second half, and capitalized on Armstrong's 26-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Jackson IV. The score gave Nebraska a 40-31 lead with 12:38 left in the third quarter. Sioux Falls came right back; first on a two-yard run from Brown, then on a 42-yard pass from Brown to Shepherd. The Storm led 45-43 at the end of the third.
Diego Marquez's 51-yard field goal pulled the Danger to within two points less than a minute into the fourth. They re-took the lead four minutes later when Armstrong hit Thomas for a 13-yard score. Brown's 21-yard strike to Sheperd put the Storm back on top, but Brown's pass for the two-point conversion failed and the lead was just one at 51-50. Armstrong scampered around the right side and into the end zone from eight yards out with 46 seconds left, but his pass for the two-point conversion failed, leaving the Danger with just a five point lead which set up Sheperd's game-winning score.
The Storm gained 239 yards of total offense to 235 for the Danger. Sioux Falls has a 68-yard edge in the passing game, while Nebraska had a 66 yard advantage in the rushing game. Nebraska was penalized eight times for 63 yards, while Sioux Falls was flagged five times for 43 yards.
Brown completed 14 of 19 passes for 204 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 31 yards and two scores. Sheperd finished with five catches for 92 yards and two scores, as well as the rushing touchdown at the end. Shelby came away seven grabs for 91 yards and two touchdown. T.J. Neal had nine tackles for the Storm defense. Tre Dickerson had an interception and Claude Davis recorded a sack.
Armstrong went 11 of 16 for 125 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed 12 times for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Walden gained 38 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown. Jackson had a pair of catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Thomas, who rushed for a touchdown, caught two passes for 23 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Stice recorded seven tackles and an interception. D'Vonn Brown, Chris Martin and Seyvon Lowry each had a sack for the Danger defense.
Nebraska will host the Steamwheelers on May 24 at 5:05 p.m. After a bye in week 14, Sioux Falls will be at home to host the San Diego Strike force on June 1 with kickoff scheduled for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
