FINAL - Barnstormers 54, Blizzard 49
5/19/19 --
GREEN BAY, WI - Daquan Neal threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Jazeric Peterson, including what proved to be the game winner with 30 seconds left as the Iowa Barnstormers escaped Titletown with a 54-49 win over the Green Bay Blizzard tonight at the Resch Center.
With the win, the Barnstormers moved to 10-1 on the season and keep sole possession of second place in the Indoor Football League standings. The top two seeds earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs, and a home date in the semifinals. Green Bay, which fell to 6-5, are still in the thick of the playoff hunt and are vying for a home game in the opening round.
This was the second game between the teams this season. The Barnstormers routed the Blizzard, 41-3 on March 9.
The first half was much of a back-and-forth. The Blizzard scored first on a 12-yard run from Lenorris Footman. The Barnstormers struck right back when Daquan Neal hit Connor Hollenbeck for an 11-yard touchdown. Green Bay went up 13-7 when Footman hit Keshaun Taylor on a 32-yard bomb. Malik Brown's one-yard run put Iowa up by a point at the 4:26 mark of the opening quarter. With two minutes left in the quarter, Footman took the snap and handed off to wide receiver Levi Copelin, who took a few steps to his right and tossed a four-yard touchdown to Taylor. The Blizzard led 20-14 at the end of one.
Iowa went back up by a point early in the second quarter when Neal scampered in from seven yards, but Green Bay came right back on Footman's 12-yard pass to Taylor with 7:22 left in the quarter. After Silverberry Mouhon's recovery of a Neal fumble, the Blizzard were back on offense at midfield. They drove to the nine yard line, and Footman rushed up the middle for the score to put the Blizzard up 34-21 with 1:23 remaining in the first half. Neal found Ryan Balentine for a three-yard touchdown to narrow the Barnstormers' deficit to six points. The Blizzard added a 17-yard field goal from Edward Ruhnke as time expired in the first half to give Green Bay a 37-28 advantage at intermission.
After the teams exchanged missed field goals to start the third quarter, the Barnstormers pulled to within two points on Neal's short pass to Connor Hollenbeck, which the receiver ran through the Blizzard defense for the touchdown. On the Blizzard's next drive, it appeared they had a chance to score, but Footman was stopped just short on a rush to the goal line. He fumbled and it was recovered by James Gray of the Barnstormers. Green Bay led 37-35 after three quarters.
Iowa took the lead three minutes into the fourth quarter on Neal's five-yard pass to Jazeric Peterson. The Blizzard re-took the lead on an 11-yard pass from Footman to Taylor, but Footman's pass for the two-point conversion sailed high, and Green Bay had a 43-42 lead with seven minutes left. The Barnstormers came right back with Neal hitting Peterson for an eight-yard touchdown with 3:03 left. Neal's pass for the two-point conversion went out of the reach of Balentine and the Barnstormers lead was five points.
The Blizzard went up 49-48 with 46 seconds left on Footman's 35-yard bomb to Taylor. It took just 16 seconds for Neal to find Peterson in the end zone for the game winner. The Blizzard had one chance left, but were forced into a turnover on downs with five seconds remaining.
Neal finished with six passing touchdowns and one rushing score. All three of Peterson's touchdowns came in the fourth quarter. Footman threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more, and Taylor caught five touchdown passes.
The Barnstormers will host the Bismarck Bucks on May 25 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Blizzard have a bye nest week, but will be back in action in week 15 when they visit the Bucks on June 1 with kickoff slated for 4:05 p.m. Green Bay defeated Bismarck 48-39 on May 4. All times listed are pacific standard time.
