FINAL - Barnstormers 65, Bucks 35
5/24/19 --
DES MOINES, IA - With 13:16 left in the third quarter, it was a one-point game.
However, that is as close as the Bismarck Bucks would get as the Iowa Barnstormers reeled off 35 straight points through late in the fourth quarter to seal a 65-35 win tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
With the victory, the Barnstormers moved to 11-1 and set up a home meeting in two weeks with the Sioux Falls Storm with at least the second seed in the Indoor Football League standings on the line. Should the Barnstormers win that, they would earn a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. They already have earned home field advantage should they face a first round opponent.
With the loss, the Bucks have been all but eliminated from playoff contention in their first season of IFL action after coming over from Champions Indoor Football over the off season. Bismarck now stands at 2-9 on the season.
The Bucks actually scored first in this one. Following their forcing the Barnstormers to turn it over on downs on the first possession of the game, wide receiver Frederick Abraham ran in from six yards out. Just over a minute later Iowa responded with a 23-yard touchdown strike from Daquan Neal to Ryan Balentine. The Barnstormers took a 14-7 lead with 1:36 to go in the opening quarter on Neal's seven yard scoring toss to Connor Hollenbeck.

The Bucks got the ball back and capped a seven-play, 32-yard drive with a one-yard run from Gibbs, but Cody Barber's kick went wide, so the Bucks still trailed by a point at the one-minute warning. Neal found Balentine for his third receiving touchdown of the night with 15 seconds left, but a failed snap led to no extra point attempt tried. Iowa led 27-20 with 15 seconds left. Bismarck drove down with a chance to score late in the half, but Gibbs was intercepted in the end zone by Cordero Hayes. Barber's 35-yard field goal as time expired gave the Barnstormers a 30-20 lead at the break.
Bismarck opened the second half with a 48 yard kickoff return from William Gibbs. After Iowa was pinned deep in their own territory, offensive lineman DeMavio Loving was called for holding. The penalty occurred in the end zone resulting in a safety, putting the Barnstormers up 30-29 at the 13:16 mark of the third. That's when the Barnstormers went on their run. Their defense held the Bucks scoreless for 25 minutes, while they scored 35 straight.
Neal found Balentine for 19 yards midway through the quarter. Then a long field goal attempt by Barber was blocked by and recovered in the end zone by Tony Winslow of Iowa and the Barnstormers were up 44-29, which would be the score at the end of three.
Balentine caught his fifth touchdown from Neal, a 44-yard bomb just over a minute into the fourth. Neal then hit Jazeric Peterson on a 46-yard bomb four minutes later. Tyrell Pearson's 11-yard fumble return to the end zone gave the Barnstormers a 65-29 lead midway though the quarter. The Bucks got back on the board on Abraham's two-yard run with 3:11 left in the game.
John Gibbs left the game due to injury early in the fourth quarter. As the Bucks did not have a backup quarterback on their roster, he was replaced by running back Diantae Thomas, who went two of three for seven yards. Bucks wide receiver Alex Wheat, Jr. was shaken up on a reception attempt over the dasher boards in the fourth quarter. Their were no specific updates on either injury, but both were spotted on the sidelines later in the quarter. Bismarck also was without wide receiver Mike Tatum, who left the team earlier in the week. Tatum is came into the weekend as the IFL all-time rushing leader with 7,929.

Neal finished 14 of 20 for 226 yards with seven touchdown tosses. He also rushed twice for 24 yards. Balentine finished with seven receptions for 138 yards to go with his five touchdown grabs. Peterson and Hollenbeck each caught three passes with a touchdown for 51 and 29 yards, respectively. Treyvon Williams posted 14 tackles.
