FINAL - Steamwheelers 43, Danger 37 (OT)
5/24/19 --
GRAND ISLAND, NE - It was classic back-and-fourth, game of runs, and it even had some bonus football; everything you would want from a pair of teams fighting for a playoff spot.
In the end the Quad City Steamwheelers prevailed with a 43-37 win over the Nebraska Danger tonight at Eihusen Arena at Heartland Events Center. With the victory, the Steamwheelers took over the sixth spot in the Indoor Football League's playoff race -- over the Danger. Perhaps even more important is that the Steamwheelers will now hold the tiebreaker over the Danger since this is the only meeting between the teams this season. Both Quad City and Nebraska stand at 5-7; a game-and-a-half back of the Green Bay Blizzard and Tucson Sugar Skulls in the standings. Green Bay has a bye this week, and the Sugar Skulls host the 10-0 Arizona Rattlers tomorrow night.
Quad City had the ball first in overtime and scored on a 20-yard pass from E.J. Hilliard. After Jacob Stytz's extra point attempt was blocked, the Danger had an opportunity to grab the win with a touchdown and successful extra point. They appeared to tie it on a three-yard pass from Tommy Armstrong, Jr. to Gregory Dent, Jr., pending the extra point. Steamwheelers' head coach Cory Ross challenged the play. The touchdown was overturned as the umpire said Dent never fully had possession of the ball in the end zone. The Danger still had two plays to try and get into the end zone, but a pair of passes from Armstrong were out of reach of his receivers and the Steamwheelers escaped with the six point win.
The Steamwheelers were forced to settle for a, 18-yard field goal from Stytz on their first possession of the game, only to see Nebraska move ahead on a one-yard plunge from Davonte Sapp-Lynch. They added to that on Armstrong's one-yard run and led 14-3 at the end of the opening quarter.
Diego Marquez's 28-yard field goal extended the lead to 17-3 just over two minutes into the second quarter. Quad City got into the end zone two minutes later on Hilliard's 39-yard bomb to Quinton Pedroza. Marquez made it a 10-point game with a 23-yard field goal at the 3:34 mark of the quarter. Hilliard rushed in from nine yards to cut the Steamwheelers' deficit to three points with 54 seconds left in the first half, but Armstrong's one-yard rush to the end zone as time expired gave the Danger a 27-17 lead at the intermission.
Beginning in the third quarter, the Steamwheelers went on a 20-point run, beginning with a 22-yard pass from Hilliard to Zavier Steward. He followed that up with a six-yard strike to Dannon Cavil with 2:45 remaining in the third. Quad City led 30-27 at the end of three.
Hilliard scampered for a nine-yard score with 10:44 left in the fourth quarter to put the Steamwheelers up 37-27. Armstrong drew the Danger to within a field goal midway through the fourth quarter on a 29-yard bomb to Dent. After stopping the Steamwheelers, the Danger quickly drove down to field goal range, where Marquez booted the game into overtime with a 26-yard field goal.
Quad City amassed 273 yards of total offense to 194 for Nebraska. That included an 80-yard edge in the passing game. Both teams were penalized heavily in the contest with the Danger being flagged 11 times for 100 yards and the Steamwheelers nine times for 61 yards.
Hilliard went 16 of 26 for 192 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He rushed 10 times for 51 yards with two visits to the end zone. Pedroza hauled in four passes for 74 yards and a pair of scores, and Keyvan Rudd caught four balls for 41 yards. Steward, who rushed eight times for 26 yards, had five catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Danzel McDaniel recorded 10 tackles for the Quad City defense. Antonio Marshall had an interception and Malik Duncan broke up three passes.
Armstrong finished 10 of 24 for 112 yards with a touchdown and a pick. He also rushed for two touchdowns. Sapp-Lynch rushed nine times for 38 yards and a score. Dent had three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown, and Eric Thomas caught three balls for 38 yards. Rahman Kamara led the way for the Danger defense with eight tackles. Luke Stice and Coutel Jenkins collaborated on a sack.
Both teams have byes next week, but will be back in action in week 16. The Steamwheelers will host the Bismarck Bucks on June 7 with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Danger will visit the San Diego Strike Force on June 7. Kickoff in that one is set for 7:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific standard time.
