3/20/20 --
Despite the Major League Soccer season being suspended due to the coronavirus, Portland Thorns fans in the Portland area will still be able to get their fixes of Thorns matches.
The fates of each league covered by SCtoC and most major sporting events are still in limbo due to the virus, as we originally reported on March 12.
On March 13, the Thorns and the National Women's Soccer League announced that it had cancelled it's three-game pre-season tournament which was scheduled to take place over a week-long period later this month and in early April.
Those pre-season games affected are the following:
March 29 - Chicago Red Stars
April 1 - U.S. U-23 National Women's Team
April 4 - Seattle Reign FC
In the meantime, local stations KPTV and KPDX will air "classic" Thorns matches from the team's first seven seasons in the MLS on Saturdays at 3 p.m. (pacific time). The specific match schedule to be broadcast was not immediately released. Fans should check their local listings for more specifics.
The broadcasters also will air Portland Timbers matches from their first nine Major League Soccer seasons at 3 p.m. on Sundays
On March 13, MLS announced it was suspending the 2020 season for a month. Yesterday, the league extended that for a second month; through May 9. The Timbers already were set to miss five games (two home and three away). The extended suspension will affect four additional games.
SCtoC will continue to provide updates on the Timbers, Thorns and other teams which we cover.
