4/27/22 --
The following is the 2022 schedule for the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League.
Portland enters its 10th season as one of the original members of the NWSL. This season will feature 22 games; two each against each of the other 11 members of the league. Over the offseason, two expansions were added to the IFL, San Diego Wave FC and Angel City FC which is based out of Los Angeles. The regular season will span from early April until early October, with playoffs to follow.
The addition of the two expansion teams prompted the NWSL to create divisions for the 2022 Challenge Cup with the Thorns joining OL Reign, San Diego and Angel City in the West Division. Though they finished with 10 points, the Thorns were eliminated from the Challenge Cup playoff tournament, which was won by the North Carolina Courage.
Portland is coming off a 2021 season during which they finished atop the league standings with 44 points 13-6-5. That earned the Thorns the NWSL shield for the second time in their history. They scored 33 goals and allowed just 17. The Thorns earned a bye in the first round before being eliminated at home by the Chicago Red Stars, 2-0. The Thorns have won the NWSL Championship twice; in 2013 and 2017. They have made the postseason in eight of nine years there has been playoffs (no actual regular season was held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they earned the NWSL Community Shield during the Fall Series, a shortened tournament which replaced a regular season.
The Thorns play their home games at Providence Park, located at 1844 SW Morrison in downtown Portland. The location was originally used as a field before the actual stadium was constructed and completed in 1926. Providence Park has a capacity of over 25,000. The Thorns share the stadium with the Portland Timbers FC of the Major League Soccer, and the stadium was previously home to the Portland St. Vikings football team.
