Oilers 39, Barnstormers 31
4/6/24 --
TULSA, OK -
The Tulsa Oilers made their home debut on Saturday night, hosting the Iowa Barnstormers at the BOK Center in a key Eastern conference battle. The home team defended their turf successfully, with the hosts taking down the visiting Barnstormers by a score of 39-31.
The Barnstormers opened the game with the ball but were held out of the endzone by the Oilers' testy defense. Iowa thus settled for a 26-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui to open the scoring. Rui's boot would be the only scoring of the quarter, as the teams exchanged missed field goal attempts on the next two possessions, leaving Iowa ahead 3-0 after one quarter.
The first touchdown of the game would occur roughly three minutes into the second quarter, coming by way of a one-yard rush by Oilers quarterback Daniel Smith, who played a handful of games in 2023 for the Barnstormers. Iowa's attempt at a response came up empty, as a pass by Darius-James Peterson got intercepted deep in Oiler territory by Romon Morris. The Oilers would drive the length of the field, and another one-yard plunge by Smith put the Oilers ahead 13-3. Tulsa would once again keep the offense of the Barnstormers in check, forcing a three-and-out and a lengthy field goal attempt from Rui. The attempt came short, and Trey Harvey returned the miss for a 50-yard touchdown, further extending the lead for the Oilers. Inside the one-minute warning at this point, Peterson had another pass intercepted by Morris, granting another chance for the Oilers to put up points before the end of the half. They would do so, courtesy of a 24-yard field goal from Austin Neufield, to close the quarter on a 22-0 run. At the half, Tulsa's advantage was 22-3.
The Oilers received the second half kickoff, but Iowa got precisely the stop it needed when Neufield sliced a 25-yard field goal attempt wide right. And after two-and-a-half quarters, Iowa finally found paydirt on a 19-yard pass from Peterson to Quian Williams to cut the lead to 22-10. The Iowa elation would be short-lived, however, as Joshua Crockett would return the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for a touchdown. The Peterson-to-Williams connection would strike again moments later, with the signal caller hitting his receiver for an eight-yard touchdown pass. That would hold as the final scoring play of the third quarter, with Tulsa taking a 28-16 lead into the final frame.
With an opportunity to close the game down to one possession, another costly turnover would beset Iowa, with another interception from Peterson falling into the hands of Harvey. Daniel Smith would again make his former team pay with his third one-yard rushing score of the ballgame, and the ensuing two-point rush by Alexis Rosario increased Tulsa's lead to 20 points. In desperate need of a quick strike, Iowa got it when Peterson hurled a 33-yard gem to Darren Wilson. The Oilers would then drive into the redzone, where Iowa's defense forced a field goal attempt from 31 yards out, which Neufield converted. The Barnstormers again found a quick touchdown on a two-yard rush from Robert Washington, and an important two-point conversion made it a 39-31 contest with just over two minutes to play. A failed onside kick attempt saw Tulsa take over deep in Iowa territory. The Oilers managed to burn the clock down to 14 seconds to go, but again left points on the table with a missed 17-yard field goal from Neufield, giving Iowa a small slice of hope. As time expired, a Peterson pass to the endzone sailed too high, out of the reach of any Barnstormer receiver. The Oilers would prevail for their first win of the season.
Daniel Smith engineered the winning effort for Tulsa tonight, completing 19 of 26 pass attempts for 128 yards, while adding 11 carries for 57 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Oilers in rushing. Montero Dubose led the team in catches (eight) and receiving yards (51 yds), while Joshua Crockett brought in three catches for 18 yards to go with his kickoff return for a touchdown on special teams. Linebacker Trey Harvey registered a missed field goal return for a touchdown and also added an interception, while Romon Morris had a pair of picks of his own.
Darius-James Peterson struggled in Iowa's loss, logging 13 completions on 25 passing attempts for 198 yards, with three touchdowns but also three interceptions, while being limited to 21 yards on nine carries. Ron Washington was the team's leading rusher (eight carries for 22 yards and a score) and contributed 27 yards on two receptions. Darren Wilson (3/68/1) and Quian Williams (5/65/2) paced the Barnstormers receiving corps. Jefferson Fritz led all defenders with 12 total tackles.
Iowa outgained Tulsa on offense 231-213, but were on the wrong side of the turnover margin (three turnovers to one). The Barnstormers absorbed five penalties totaling 76 yards, with Tulsa tagged for four infractions and 56 yards.
The Oilers take a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between these two clubs, with this win being the first of the series to be recorded by the home side. The reverse fixture is set for Saturday June 22, to be held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Barnstormers (0-2) remain on the road as they visit the Massachusetts Pirates (3-0) on Friday April 12 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. The Oilers (1-1) are also in action next week as they visit the Sioux Falls Storm (0-2) on Sunday April 14 for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
