Oilers 56, Storm 40
4/14/24 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Tulsa Oilers jumped out to a 32-14 halftime lead and never looked back as they earned their first-ever defeat of the Sioux Falls Storm tonight, 56-40, at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Oilers, in just their second IFL season, improved to 2-1 with the win. The two wins equals their win total from last year's inaugural season which saw them finish 2-13 and in last place in the Eastern Conference. This is the team's second straight victory after having defeated the Iowa Barnstormers at home last week. The Storm, who represented the conference at last year's IFL National Championship Game, fall to 0-3 on the young season. The Storm are in their first season under head coach Andre Fields after Kurtiss Riggs had spent the previous 20 years at the helm.
The teams meet once more this season; June 15 at Tulsa. Sioux Falls, which swept Tulsa last season, leads the overall series between the teams 2-1, including marks of 1-1 at home and 1-0 on the road.
The Oilers took the opening kickoff and drove to the Sioux Falls two-yard line. They had to settle for an 18-yard field goal from Michael Hall to go up early. Xavier Jackson's three-yard scoring run put the Storm up 7-3 midway through the opening quarter. Tulsa retook the lead when quarterback Daniel Smith with some pushing help from his offensive teammates, made it into the end zone from a yard out. The Oilers led 10-7 at the end of one.
Tulsa extended the lead on Smith's four-yard touchdown toss to Johnathan Nance. in the second quarter. Sioux Falls narrowed the gap when Draysean Hudson ran an end-around to the left side into the end zone for three yards. Smith then hit Alexis Rosario for an 11-yard touchdown with 3:11 left in the half. Two-and-a-half minutes later, the same duo connected on a five-yard touchdown. On the kickoff, Hall's kick was not returned out of the end zone by the Storm which resulted in a rouge. The Oilers led by 18 at the half.
Jackson stopped the bleeding for the Storm with a four-yard touchdown early in the third, but the Smith-to-Rosario connection struck again for the Oilers to put them up 39-20 five minutes into the quarter. Billy Hall found Jackson for a seven-yard score to pull the Storm to within a pair of touchdowns, but Jarrod Ware, Jr. rushed for a two-yard touchdown which put Tulsa up by 20 with 46 left in the quarter. The Oilers led 46-26 after three.
Hall rushed for a two-yard touchdown before Smith found Rosario for a 10-yard touchdown with 8:40 left in the fourth quarter. Tulsa followed that up with a 40-yard field goal to give the Oilers their largest lead of the game at 24 points with just over a minute to play. Keyshawn Williams rushed for a one-yard touchdown for the Storm, and also rushed for the two-point conversion, with 18 seconds remaining. By then, however, it was all academic.
Smith completed 18 or 26 passes for 269 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions, and also rushed for a score. Rosario finished with four touchdowns on eight catches for 77 yards. Nance caught five balls for 35 yards and a score. Jordan Jones, who led the IFL in tackles last season for the Oilers, had 11. Noah Lyles and Courtney Ledyard each recorded a sack.
Hall finished nine of 14 passing for 76 yards a touchdown and no picks. He also rushed for 59 yards off 14 carries with another score. Jackson accounted for three scores for the offense; two rushing and one receiving. Hudson caught four passes for 37 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another score. Amin Black led the defense with 10 tackles, while Elijah Reed added eight.
Tulsa finished with 208 yards to 164 for Sioux Falls. The Oilers had a 93-yard edge in receiving, but were outgained by 60 yards by the Storm. The Storm were penalized 15 times for 71 yards, while the Oilers were flagged nine times for 117 yards.
The Storm will visit the Green Bay Blizzard on April 19 with kickoff set for 4:05 p.m. The Oilers are at home on April 20 as they host the Frisco Fighters with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
Both games, as well as all IFL games this season, will be streamed live on the IFL YouTube Channel and Caffeine TV IFL. SCtoC will present previews of those, and all, games this season. Those previews will be posted on the board of the home team in each game. Click for our complete IFL 2024 Schedule.
