TULSA, OK - In a game which was never really in doubt from the first quarter on, the Frisco Fighters defeated the Tulsa Oilers tonight, 60-32, at BOK Center to remain undefeated on the season.
The Fighters jumped out to a 40-10 halftime lead and never looked back as they moved to 4-0. That puts them in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference after the Massachusetts Pirates fell at the Quad City Steamwheelers tonight, 54-43.
The Fighters have now won all four matches of against the Oilers dating back to Tulsa's expansion season a year ago. Frisco defeated the Oilers in overtime in the season opener for both teams this year, 31-25, in overtime on March 22. The teams do not meet again this season.
Frisco received the opening kickoff and started quickly when TJ Edwards found Cole Blackman on a 20-yard touchdown toss in the ride side of the end zone. Michael Hall tried to put the Oilers on the board, but his 27-yard field goal sailed wide right. Each team was aided by defensive pass interference calls on their opening respective drives. The Fighters went up 13-0 with a five-yard touchdown run around the left side from Martez Carter. Oilers Joshua Crockett pinballed his way down to the Frisco four-yard line on the ensuing kickoff, putting the Oilers in excellent field position. During that possession, Tulsa leading tackler Jordan Jones was ejected following a hard tackle, leaving a void in the Oilers' defense. The Fighters forced a turnover on downs at their own two-yard line late in the quarter. They led 13-0 sat the end of one.
Frisco added to the lead early in the second quarter on Edwards' five-yard quarterback draw. Tulsa got on the board when Daniel Smith threw to Joshua Crockett on the ground at the five. Crockett, who had not been touched by a defender was able to get up and get into the end zone for what amounts to a 17-yard touchdown pass. The Fighters answered almost immediately when Edwards found a wide open Devon McCoy for a 39 scoring bomb. Hall connected on a 37-yard field goal with 5:49 left in the half. The Fighters kept their feet on the gas, scoring on a three-yard touchdown strike from Edwards to Blackman. The Oilers drove into Frisco territory when Smith was intercepted by the Fighters' Lionel McConnell. Frisco capitalized on the turnover with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Edwards to Blackmon over the right dasher board of the end zone with five seconds remaining. The Fighters led 40-10 at the break.
Tulsa opened the second half with a three-yard touchdown run around the right side from Jarrod Ware, Jr. The Oilers added to that when Taylor Hawkins tackled McCoy before he could return the kickoff out of the end zone for the rouge. The Fighters turned over the ball on downs as they were forced to try a 61-yard field goal which went out of bounds. The Oilers struck again when Smith fired a scoring strike to Alexis Rosario in the ride side of the end zone. Suddenly, the Fighters' lead was just 15 points with 5:29 remaining in the third. Frisco had something to say about that, however, as Edwards rushed in from a yard out. After the play, Edwards and Trey Lyles had offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. It was Lyles' second of the game, which results in an ejection. Tulsa ran a pitch option, but Smith's pitch to Ware went behind him and was recovered by Ethan Caselberry of the Fighters. Frisco led 46-25 after three quarters of play.
The Fighters added to their lead on a nine-yard run from Carter. They added even more to their lead with a 10-yard run around the left side from Edwards. The Oilers weren't finished as Smith hit Ware for a touchdown in the left side of the end zone.
Edwards completed 14 or 17 passes fo 153 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Caselberry and Koby Perry finished with six tackles apiece. He also rushed for 57 yards and three scores. Carter scored twice off 11 rushes for 78 yards. McCoy caught four passes for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Blackman hauled in five passes for three touchdowns.
Smith went 19 or 32 for 123 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. Rosario caught six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, and Ware rushed for a touchdown and caught another. Tre Harvey recorded seven tackles.
The Fighters accumulated 295 total yards compared to 163 for the Oilers. Passing yards were nearly identical, so the difference came in the rushing game where Frisco had an advantage of 133 yards. Frisco was penalized 11 times for 66 yards and Tulsa was called for eight infractions for 90 yards.
The Fighters are at home to battle the San Antonio Gunslingers for the first time with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. The Oilers will visit the Quad City Steamwheelers on April 28 for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
