March 5 - Blazers guard Wesley Matthews is out for the season after suffering an tear in his left achilles early in the third quarter of tonight's game against the Mavericks tonight.
The injury occurred when the sixth-year guard begin to drive inside from the right side of the three-point line and seemed to stumble. Matthews said in his post-game interview -- yes, he actually answered questions after finding out the news -- that official Ron Garretson said he heard the snap of the Acchillies and said he knew exactly what it was.
Matthews was helped to the locker room where he underwent tests. By the end of the game -- approximately 50 minutes in real time -- Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported the injury on twitter.
Treating the injury requires surgery and generally an 8-12 month recovery time. In his post-game interview, Matthews shruggingly said "I'll be back in five."
Certainly, that is optimistic but it shows Matthews' heart. He is averaging 15.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He is fourth in the NBA this season in three point makes with 173.
Logic would dictate that newly acquired Blazers Arron Afflalo and Alonzo Gee will be called upon to pick up the slack in Matthews' place. CJ McCollum and Allen Crabbe also could be in the mix. The Blazers have an open roster spot which could be used to sign another player, should they decide to do so.
Matthews is currently the only player listed on the Blazers injury report.
The Blazers beat the Mavericks, 94-75.

This just sucks. We have to hold our heads high because we know Wesley will hold his high. Wesley will be okay. The team can survive.

just when we got everyone back to full strength we get hit with this. i know this is going to really bother Wes. the only hope now is that Arron and Alonzo can fill in. in away, it's good that Olshey made the trade like he did. we just have to see now how it pans out.

Wesley posted on instagram this morning that he was "in tears" from the outpouring of support from Rip City.

I feel bad for Wesley. I hope he handles his recovery intelligently and aggressively.
