DAVID'S TAKES
SPOKANE:
With five games left to go in the regular season, both Spokane and Los Angeles are alive for the fourth and final playoff spot in the National Conference. Spokane has been plagued by inconsistent play throughout the season and could very well be 8-5. Tension among Shock fans are calling for the firing of Head Coach Andy Olson with the team's struggles, undisciplined play, and questionable play calling that has cost the Shock some important drives that could have propelled the team to victory.
Player to Watch: Warren Smith (QB)
With Carson Coffman going down with a separated right throwing shoulder, Spokane will either turn to Arvell Nelson or Warren Smith to start at quarterback. Considering Nelson has been working in a Cleveland salt mine prior to Week 13 and doesn't have enough reps with the current offensive roster, Smith looks like the logical choice to start against LA. While he only has a 2-4 record, he has impressive numbers for a rookie, completing 65.2% of his passes for 1,710 yards, 32 touchdowns and a 104.2 rating. He's also a dual threat on the ground, leading the Shock in rush yards (110) and rushing touchdowns (5)
LOS ANGELES:
Los Angeles has been the league's doormat since their 2014 inaugural season, but lately the team has begun to find itself playing competitive football. In the teams first 8 games, the KISS lost by an average of 20.5 points per game. Since their Week 9 Bye, LA has gone 2-4, but their average margin of defeat is 6.6 points per game. Although having consistent play from the QB position is one of the team's weaknesses, the offense seems to have stabilized since the Bye week. This team has changed since the first half of the season, but face a tough road ahead if they want to make a bid for the playoffs.
Player to Watch: Rayshaun Kizer (DB)
One major key to the LA turnaround was a trade acquisition of Rayshaun Kizer from the New Orleans VooDoo. In his five games with the KISS, Kizer has 4 interceptions (tying a KISS franchise record), 35 total tackles, and 6 passes defended. His leadership and play was a huge key in LA's shocking upset over San Jose, and if the KISS want to beat the Shock, they need a big game from him.
QUOTABLE
Shock OL/TE Patrick Afif on Spokane's 62-27 loss to the SaberCats
"Little things just didn't go our way. Little mistakes, and in arena football they add up a lot, everything is just escalated by 100. In this game, it catches up to you."
FEATURED TWEETS
EXTRA
Both Los Angeles and Spokane have lined up the most QBs under center this season (Spokane 6, LA 5). Los Angeles will start QB Danny Southwick against the Shock, whom he played for early in the season (Week 3). Southwick, who was acquired in a trade by the KISS, was brought in to replace starting QB Matt Bassuener, who went down with an injury against Spokane in Week 7. The interesting part? Bassuener had a brief appearance for the Shock in a Week 2, and was eventually released by Spokane in favor of Southwick. Shortly after his release, Bassuener was acquired by the KISS. Unless Southwick is benched prior to Sunday's 3 p.m. kickoff, both LA/Spokane match-ups in the 2015 season will feature a QB lining up under center for Los Angeles who played for the Shock earlier in the season.
