10.19.15 -
The franchise formerly known as the Spokane Shock has announced a "Name the Team" contest.
After announcing that Spokane was unable to come to an agreement with the AFL on re-acquiring the Shock trademark, the organization launched a "Name the Team" contest. Fans are encouraged to submit names for Spokane's re-brand as it embarks on its inaugural season in the Indoor Football League next year.
The organization will begin taking suggestions for new team names from Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 23rd. The contest ends at 12:00 PM (pacific) on Friday.
Fans are also encouraged to submit artwork concepts for the team's new logo and that suggestions are to be e-mailed to info@spokanefootball.com.
The team will continue to use the former Shock color scheme with the re-branded franchise (navy, orange, white). Fan submissions will be judged by a panel of team ownership, staff, season ticket holders, sponsors, and Spokane community representatives. Spokane's ownership will also have a legal staff determine if a proposed team name is available for trademarks and copywrites.
After the 12:00 PM (pacific) deadline, the Spokane staff will tally the popular names and present the Top 3 selections to the team's panel. Fans who submit the first and original names/logos that make the Top 3 will win a pair of 2016 season tickets.
“This is an exciting time for our organization and our fans as we embark on a new era of Spokane indoor football,” said Ryan Eucker, Spokane Director of Operations. “Our community has a rich history of indoor football, one that has been created thanks to the unwavering support our fans. We look forward to continuing this tradition that we have created together over the past ten seasons.”

I would be interested to see what name they come up with. I am too. There was an article in the paper a few days ago that said that using team names like "Shockwave" or anything with "Shock" in it wouldn't be allowed. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

Just that using Shock in any form wouldn't work for the new name. Watch, when they announce the name, they'll make my information look inaccurate and call them the Shockwave.

I wonder what the legal issues could be. If only "someone" related to me in law school could chime in! There is a professional women's football team in Portland called the Shockwave.

There is a professional women's football team in Portland called the Shockwave. it's a little tough to say since i would have to know the exact wording of a contract in order to say one way or another. i wouldn't think a name like Shockwave would be in violation of any contract, but it could be in there. one thing i would say is that the AFL already looks petty at this point, so they wouldn't be doing themselves any public relations favors by nitpicking any more on this issue.

Update:
The team formerly known as the Shock announced on Facebook that over 400 submissions for a new franchise name. Spokane management will create a Top 5-10 list by the end of the week. From there, they will send the Top 10 to their legal experts for trademark availability. After that, the team will choose a graphic designer to develop concept logos for the Top 3 Names.

So they probably will not release the 5-10 names until the attorneys clear the possible copyrights. I kind of want it to go faster!

Hopefully they actually listen to the fans, unlike Portland who had the most requested name of "Growlers".

Has there been any recent word on this? No word at all since late October. Mostly free agent signings and those have been relatively on the down low. I would have thought there'd be some sort of update, but I guess they're still covering all the legal bases with the trademarks and all.

I tweeted the team the day before Thanksgiving to get an idea of how long it'd be until we got some sort of update regarding the Spokane re-brand. This was what I got back:
So, it sounds like they've made some progress. Hopefully we'll get something before Christmas to have an idea of what to call the team.
