Spokane Empire QB Charles Dowdell has been named Vidswap.com's Offensive Player of the Week for Week 1.
In Spokane's first game as members of the IFL, Dowdell (6'0'', 210 lbs) guided the Empire offense to a 61-50 victory over the rival Tri-Cities Fever in Kennewick. Dowdell had an impressive in his debut for the Empire, completing 12 of 20 passes for 160 yards and 6 touchdowns. His favorite target was WR JJ Hayes, who caught 6 passes for 73 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also connected with veterans Samuel Charles (3 receptions, 46 yards, 1 touchdown) and Carl Sims. Sims, who who caught 3 passes for 41 yards, hauled in 2 touchdowns, including a remarkable 1 handed pass in traffic leading to the score.
The veteran QB from Saginaw Valley State also contributed in the ground game, scoring the Empire's first ever touchdown by a rush only 0:27 seconds into the game. Dowdell rushed 9 times for 42 yards and his effectiveness in the ground game helped open the lanes for RB/WR Trevor Kennedy, who ran 18 times for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Dowdell earned the first IFL weekly award in franchise history for the Spokane Empire, beating out WR Lemans Casimier (Iowa), RB Julian Laing (Billings), QB Brandon Mitchell (Colorado), and WR Demarius Washington (Colorado).
