Two days before their home debut, the Spokane Empire announced that they have acquired offensive lineman Mike Trice in a trade with the Sioux Falls Storm. .
Spokane bolsters up its offensive line with the addition of Trice (6'6'', 340 lbs), is a four-year veteran of the Indoor Football League. A graduate of Hofstra University (New York), Trice got his start in the world of arena football with the Trenton Steel of the SIFL in 2011. The next season, Trice moved up to the Indoor Football League, playing from 2012-2013 with the Colorado Ice (now Crush). While in Colorado, Trice would earn All-Second Team All-IFL Honors in both seasons.
"Mike is an experienced lineman within the IFL that will help add great depth to that position group," Empire head coach Adam Shackleford said in the team's press release. "He'll make a great addition to our roster."
Shackleford, who coached the Tri-Cities Fever from 2010-2015, is familiar with Trice's skill set, as Trice was a member of the Fever during the 2014 season. He would move on and play for the Nebraska Danger in 2015 and participate with in training camp this year with Sioux Falls.
In exchange for Trice, Spokane traded "future considerations" to the Storm. The team also made additional transactions, activating rookie DL Byron Bennett (6'2'', 295 lbs) off the team's exempt list and placed defensive back Demtruce McNeal (ankle) and offensive/defensive lineman Mauola Malaga (foot) on the Short Term Injured Reserve list.
The Short Term IR designation is different in the IFL compared to the AFL. In the AFL, short-term IR players must spend four weeks on the IR list before being eligible to return. In the IFL, players placed on the Short Term IR requires a minimum of two inactive weeks and a maximum of four weeks on the list before the team decides to re-activate the injured players or place them on the season-long IR.
