Spokane Empire RB Trevor Kennedy has been named Vidswap.com's Offensive Player of the Week for Week 7.
Despite only playing one time in a 4 week span, Kennedy looked to be well rested and refreshed, running all over the Iowa Barnstormers in the Empire's 54-51 victory. The rushing defense for the Barnstormers had no answer in stopping Kennedy (6'0'', 205 lbs), who torched them with a 13 carry, 127 yard performance. His 9.8 yards per carry average in the game is the most among running backs in the IFL this season with 10+ carries in a single game. He also scored 4 rushing touchdown, which set a career high and also tied an IFL season high for most rushing touchdowns in a game (QB Jameel Sewell, Nebraska Danger).
The first of Kennedy's four touchdowns began with an electrifying 10-yard run that resulted from a failed sweep play. Kennedy quickly improvised, reversing to the other end and broke free to give the Empire a 7-0 lead. "I don't know where that came from. I was thinking if I reverse this I have to score or coach is going to yell at me," Kennedy said in a post-game interview with The Spokesman-Review.
The rookie RB from MercyHurst University (PA) has made his impact on the expansion Empire. A tryout player in mini-camp, he was converted from his natural position at wide receiver to running back by head coach Adam Shackleford and so far it's paid off. Kennedy looks like a natural at the position, leading the IFL in rushing yards per game (74.0) and ranks second in the IFL in rushing touchdowns (10), rushing yards (296), and yards per rush (6.2).
Kennedy becomes the second player in franchise history to win IFL Offensive Player of the Week; QB Charles Dowdell earned the first OPotW honor for his performance against the Tri-Cities Fever in Week 1. Honorable mentions for Offensive Player of the Week include WR Lemans Casimier (Iowa), QB Dylan Favre (Cedar Rapids), WR Brady Roland (Iowa), and WR Demarius Washington (Colorado).
The other IFL Week 7 winners include:
Defensive Player of the Week - DB James Ackel, Nebraska Danger
Special Teams Player of the Week - K Nicholas Belcher, Cedar Rapids Titans
The Empire look to maintain first place in the Intense Conference as they square off against the Colorado Crush on Saturday, April 9th at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PST. You can catch the action locally on the radio on 700 ESPN AM or online at 700ESPN.com. The game will be broadcast locally in Spokane on SWX. Out of market video feed of the game can be found online at IFL Live TV (paid subscription).
