The past year at SCtoC has been marked as a year of re-direction. As of August 6, we have completed three years, and have no intentions of slowing down.
This site, which started as a blogger site, and quickly turned into a college football and Portland Trail Blazers forum, has expanded in a number of ways in which I could never had imagined. As with anything, some were minor changes, but some were extremely major. I will get to those as I present to you, our members, the State of the Forum for SCtoC as we enter our fourth year.
In just about every way, the past year has been the most monumental of our three years. This has come in our coverage of our sports, our upkeep of current events regarding news pertinent to the teams which we cover, and our increased connections with outside entities regarding the teams and sports which we cover.
Ironically, as was with the two previous years, our blog content has been lean. DiamondThief spoke to us about her ACL tear and presented a touching piece about the college graduations of our staff members, and SurferGirl lamented on the shooting of a UCLA professor. However, we have not touched on the blog section much more than that. For myself, I have not even written a blog in over a year. For someone who had penned over 105 blogs on the defunct Blazer Blogger Network, this has surprised me. I chalk this up to different priorities and schedules. The decline in blog activity on this site does not concern me. It does, however, leave me with a bit of a perplexing feeling.
Our game threads are what propel this site. Over these past three years, while this does not surprise, it does come as a continuously prideful point of our forum. Over our history, we have had live game threads for the Portland Thunder/Steel, Spokane Shock/Empire, Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, college football, and a number of other events.
These have been among the most interesting, entertaining and most-involved threads we've ever had.
We just finished our coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. I have to give Cam , Yeseeka and SurferGirl some major props for their previews and upkeep. I did a little research and have found no other site -- not NBC nor any of the other sports or entertainment sites do something which we did here at SCtoC. With daily (and often multi-daily) updates, we gave you a full medal count and list of medalists for the United States, Australia and the Philippines. We have members on this site from all of these countries so, as a service to them, we put the medal count and listing of medalists from each country on one page.
We had done that before with the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in 2014. The summer games include more athletes and countries, as well as more events. This was more daunting for the three of them and they, quite frankly, nailed it.
While we are based in Portland, Oregon, we found this site to have a major focus on Spokane, specifically the Empire of the IFL and Chiefs of WHL. I know David brought us the Spokane Shock of the AFL. The organization chose to move to the IFL. Due to trademark issues with a stubborn AFL commissioner, the team re-branded to the Spokane Empire.
David brought us every bit of news and educated our readers on the ins and outs of the Empire and the IFL, and continues to do this when it comes to free agency. Through his efforts, we have developed a relationship with the Empire. We retweet them. They retweet us. When the game stats weren't working, they began e-mailing them to us. This is an area in which I had hoped to make strides. We have. David was a huge part of that. To that end, Ryan Eucker, the general manager of the Empire, has been a great friend to us. I hope that he understands the thanks respect I have for him and his efforts to promote the Empire. We have a terrific relationship with the Empire. Not only the team, but with the general manager, Ryan Eucker. I cannot still fathom how gracious a team can be to a news forum. I am ecstatic about our future with the Empire. I have never seen anything like to cooperation between our site and the Empire. Simply put, the Blazers Chris McGowan could learn a whole lot a lot from Ryan Eucker about how to relate to fans. I salute Mr. Eucker ("Ike") for being that person; for making the Empire the media success that they are.
Also a huge part of our success in covering the Empire in game threads, and those of the Steel, was something unexpected. Our Nevadanut , a musician by heart and degree, updated scores for both teams during the season. She learned from the best, Angi, and drove our Empire and Steel game threads. Much has happened this past year for Heidi. She graduated from college, something she says she thought would never happen. I implore Heidi to tell you her whole story. I have heard it. Jessica has heard it. Heidi's story is incredible. And if she does not volunteer it, I implore you to ask her to tell you.
The Steel were a question mark all season, and it looks as if, according to Angi's forecasts, that the team will either fold or move to another city; namely San Antonio or Sacramento. Angi will make sure our readers are the first to know when such news hits.
We already have begun to follow the IFL's newest team, the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles. We have given Heidi that ball witch to roll. They have decided their team name, their colors, their logo and have announced their first head coach, William McCarthy. Fans vote for everything for this team. This is going to be interesting to follow.
We have de-emphasized our coverage of the Portland Trail Blazers. It's not that we care less for them; it's that coverage of the team is already over saturated, especially in the Portland area. We would like to focus our efforts on teams which are more prevalent to our now-base coverage. That said, we are working on a plan to cover the Trail Blazers. Going forward, we just may be looking at in a different way.
This year we have expanded into an area which was completely new to SCtoC. We have summaries of each week of the Seattle Mariners season. As I said, this is a new thing, but we are looking for jmunson25 to continue bringing us the insights to the Mariners. it's been an inconsistent start, but we look forward to Jared binging us this news.
We also will continue to post about the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns. These are two exciting teams in their respective sports and we look forward to highlighting their seasons and achievements.
Obviously, college football is upon us. This was the first area in which we began our expansion from a blog forum to a sports forum. We have focused on our teams for the college football seasons each year. This began with Julianne's college football schedules back in 2013 for that upcoming season.
Julie has posted her schedules for the teams we intend to cover this season. This is the fourth year she has done so and we are ready to roll. The college football season began with our coverage of the Sydney Bowl. Heidi had an comprehensive preview for that game between the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and her alma mater, The California Golden Bears. It was an exciting game and, given that it's in Australia, I know more than a few of our members were paying attention.
Heidi's preview of the Cal-Hawaii game in Sydney, Australia was amazing. She kept it up in the second half, admirably along with Cam and Jessica. I salute our support of our college football schedule.
We have entered into our fourth season on this forum. We have made strides. We have re-defined our mission. We may not emphasize what we have previously, but we are strong in what we do emphasize. We will continue to look for new teams and leagues which may with to be featured on this site. As David told a podcast host recently, Sports Coast to Coast means that we welcome any team from any league. We are always open to that.
This site is different, but it is the same. We have done a lot of things that we did not expect to do. However, we will not sacrifice our intentions and beliefs. I think many who are here agree. We don't need insults, personal attacks and profanity. Mark my word, regardless of what some may wish, we will always be a family friendly site. That will always be what sets apart from other sites. I believe more a appreciate that than do not. I admit I am an optimist.
We have branched out and made some arrangements with some outside sites. One did not work out due to an egotist view of the other party, but Heidi has garnered a relationship with The Line Sports Podcast, which presents informative opinions of the NFL and other areas. It is my wish that our mutual support can be beneficial to our readers and to their listeners.
With that said, this forum is now over three years old. We have gone through changes. We will always look for new opportunities to make it better. I implore all of you to recruit people -- your friends -- to come to this site. We get a lot of readers. We don't get enough commentors. This is getting dire. Simply put, we need your participation.
This has been a strong year for us. It's time to take the next step and make it all that much better.
Thank you to all who have made us great.
