Head Coach William McCarthy has been relieved of his duties (image credit: Salt Lake Screaming Eagles / Facebook) 3.1.17 -
In a surprising announcement, the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles have announced that Head Coach William McCarthy has been relieved of his coaching duties effective March 1st.
Salt Lake Screaming Eagles President Thom Carter made the announcement Wednesday morning, citing philosophical differences between McCarthy and management of the team. Provided below is Carter's official statement regarding the coaching change.
The change comes in the midst of the team's bye week. McCarthy was 1-1 as the Head Coach of the Screaming Eagles, who are coming off a 42-41 overtime thriller against the Colorado Crush. He was hired on August 29th, 2016 as a result of winning the majority fan vote.
Team officials are currently reviewing new coaching candidates to replace McCarthy. They will continuously update fans throughout the process.
One source with ties to FANchise has stated that Salt Lake will turn to part owner Ray Austin as the team's interim coach for the short term. The new HC will reportedly be voted on.
The Screaming Eagles return from their bye week to take on the Spokane Empire on Friday, March 10th at the Maverik Center. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (PST).

This is definitely surprising. The curiousness in me makes me wonder what those differences are. I watched the interviews with him during the application voting by the fans and he seemed to really buy into the scheme. It seemed the same when Bannock spoke with him. I can't help but think this is premature. It's kind of hard the believe the differences were that far apart.

If I had to guess it was because when it came to the actual games he didn't buy into Fanchise. That is just my take though.

Something that didn't occur to me when I wrote the initial article. Shawn Liotta. Although his role is the "Coach of the Fans", he knows the system. He'd be a logical choice in such a short time frame.

I am pretty sure that there is more to it than meets the eye or was reported in the story of the firing. Speculation will get us nowhere, except down a dark path where judgment lies. I am pretty sure that some of the people that you have listed as possible candidates are employed...Heron O'Neil comes to mind. Good coverage of a tough situation.

I was google searching last year's coaches and couldn't find what Heron was up to. Where is he, anyway?

One of my connections tipped me off on what's to come for SLC. Updated information is updated into the original post.
Ray Austin, part owner of FANchise, will serve as the interim. He'll hold the line until the new coach comes in, which be voted on. The Screaming Eagles have another bye after next week's game vs Spokane, so I'm going to guess that's when they'll do the voting.

Liotta would have been an interesting choice. It wouldn't surprise me if Austin served in the interim. That basically makes sense.

I do know that they are not going to have the fans vote on the replacement since it is mid-season and there is a little urgency behind it.

My source said there was a vote but didn't specify if it was fan vote or admin vote. But I'm willing to bet Aaron's right when it's more of an internal decision.

I just got home from work. Long day. So what is our exact update at this point? The update is that Ray Austin is the interim coach. And that they are targeting Tuesday at the latest for a replacement HC. I updated it after speculating it'd be a former coach.

I didn't catch the update. Sorry. My mind is pudding right now. I need to review this, but I'm eating first.

I would wonder if having a new coach will set the team back. It was a great win. We will have to see if this really is the correct move.
