SPOKANE, WA - For the second week in a row, a Spokane Empire defensive back was honored for his game changing performance. This week, Tyree Robinson has been named Vidswap.com's Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3.
Robinson (5'11'', 200 lbs) was a key figure in the Empire's difficult task of slowing down the high flying offense of the Wichita Falls Nighthawks. Despite falling 56-57 in 2 OT, Robinson led all Empire defenders with 9 total tackles (6 solo) and had one pass-breakup. With the Empire down 17-10 and 0:59 left in the 2nd Quarter, Robinson came up with a huge interception off of QB Charles McCullum, the 2016 IFL MVP. With confusion among the Nighthawks' offense, Robinson was able to speed the opposite direction, returning the interception 21 yards for the touchdown to tie the game at 17-17.
Robinson's pick-six touchdown was the second consecutive feat by an Empire defender in as many weeks. Last week, teammate Robert Brown, the Week 2 IFL DPotW, returned a 39 yard interception for a TD against the Green Bay Blizzard.
In addition to his first interception of the 2017 season, his Week 3 honors mark the first DPotW for him as a member of the Empire. He previously earned DPotW honors during the 2015 season as a member of the Cedar Rapids Titans.
Honorable mentions for Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3 include Robinson's teammate, LB Nick Haag, as well as DB Antonio Marshall (Colorado), DB Trey Wafford (Nebraska), and DB Neiko Conway (Wichita Falls).
The other IFL Week 3 winners include:
Offensive Player of the Week - QB Derrick Bernard, Nebraska Danger
Special Teams Player of the Week - K Tanner Graeber, Wichita Falls Nighthawks
Celebration of the Week - WR Dimitri Stimphill, Nebraska Danger (Duck, Duck, Goose)
This week, the Empire will partake in the IFL's version of Monday Night Football, travelling to the Maverik Center to take on the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles in West Valley City, UT. Kickoff is scheduled at 6 p.m. PST. You can catch the action locally on the radio on 700 ESPN AM, 105.3 FM, or online at 700ESPN.com. The game will be broadcast on the IFL's Official YouTube account.
