CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wichitas Falls Nighthawks broke out to a 29-point lead in the second quarter and never looked back, as they disposed of the Cedar Rapids Titans, 42-23.
The teams traded field goals in the first quarter before the Nighthawks went on a 29-0 run into the fourth quarter. Rockne Belmonte made four field goals -- of 16, 46, 20 and 47 yards -- in the win.
Wichita Falls went up 10-3 on the final play of the first quarter on a three-yard pass from Charles McCullum to Tyron Laughinghouse. The Titans did not score in the second or third quarters, though they did put together 20 fourth-quarter points to make the result somewhat respectable.
The Nighthawks had 15 first downs compared to the Titans' 11.
Nighthawks' quarterback Charles McCullum is making an early case for himself for Offensive Player of the Year. He has led his team to a 4-0 record. He completed 22 of 30 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Angelo Pease rushed 9 times for 28 yards and a pair of scores. Troy Evans caught 8 passes for 76 yards, while Jordan Jolly caught three balls for 40 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Williams had 5 grabs for 30 yards. Toni Pulu and Walter Thomas each had a sack, and Kewan Alfred led Wichita Falls with 5 tackles.
Brion Carnes struggled for the titans. he completed just 11 of 34 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran six times for 51 yards. Damond Powell had five receptions for 76 yards and a score. Tre Parmalee and Jamuel Jones each caught a touchdown pass. Robert Haynes was stellar on defense, leading the team with 12 tackles. Antonie Jackson had an interception.
The Nighthawks (4-0) play next on March 25 when they visit the Sioux Falls Storm for a 5:05 (PT) kickoff. the Titans (0-3) will face the Green Bay Blizzard on March 19 in Cedar Rapids. That kickoff is set for 1:05 (PT). Both of those games, as well as all of the leagues games this season are available for streaming on the IFL's Youtube channel.
