SIOUX FALLS, SD - In a game pitting the last two of the IFL's undefeated, the Sioux Falls Storm broke it open in the third quarter to dispense of the Wichita Falls Nighthawks, 55-21.
Up 28-13 at the half, the Storm scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, one on a four-yard run from running back Robbie Rouse and another on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Lorenzo Brown to wide receiver Mike Tatum. It extended their lead to 41-13 by the end of the third and, effectively, put the game out of reach.
The Nighthawks would finally score with 3:53 left in the game, drawing to 48-21 on a 45-yard pass from quarterback Charles McCullum to wide receiver Tyron Laughinghouse. Tatum, who scored four touchdowns on the day, closed out the scoring with 53 seconds left on an eight-yard run.
The Nighthawks dominated in every offensive category, including time of possession with a 39:07 to 20:53 edge. They also held edges in total offense (277 to 154 yards) and first downs (26 to 12).
Sioux Falls intercepted McCullum four times; one each from J'Vontez Blackmon, Cartlton Watkins, Fred Barnes and Rashard Smith each registering once.
Brown was nearly perfect oin the day, completing 19 of his 21 attempts for 187 yards and four scores, while also rushing for 39 yards on 11 carries. Rouse run 13 times for 38 yards and three touchdowns. Tatum added to his rushing touchdown with eight catches for 87 yards and three trips to the end zone. Wide receiver Korey Williams had eight catches for 76 yards and a touchdown. Blackmon led the Storm in tackles with seven, and Claude Davis had a sack.
McCullum went 13 of 29 attempts for 118 yards, a touchdown and the four picks. Running back Tyler Williams ran 10 times for 37 yards and a touchdown. Williams also caught 4 passes for 31 yards. Laughinghouse had 2 catches for 48 yards to go with his touchdown. Wide receiver Phillip Barnett added four receptions for 27 yards to the Nighthawks' cause. Neiko Conway led Wichita Falls in tackles with 10, and he had a fumble recovery.
After a bye in week 7, The Storm (5-0) will next be in action on April 8 when the visit the Cedar Rapids Titans (0-4). Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. (PT). The Titans' game against the Iowa Barnstormers is ongoing as of this writing, and they face the Green Bay Blizzard on April 1. The Nighthawks (4-1) will visit the Arizona Rattlers (1-2) on April 1 at 5:05 p.m. (PT). The Rattlers week 6 game in Green Bay against the Blizzard is ongoing as of this writing. Both of those games, as well as all of the leagues games this season are available for streaming on the IFL's Youtube channel.
