WICHITA FALLS, TX - The Salt Lake Screaming Eagles rally in the fourth quarter fell short, as they dropped their fourth straight, Saturday night at the hands of the Wichita Falls Nighthawks.
On both third and goal and on fourth and goal at their own 13 yard line inside the last minute, Verlon Reed's pass attempts to Devin Mahina fell inccomplete. The Nighthawks were then able to run out the clock. Reed's 37-yard pass to Cy Strahm set up the Screaming Eagles at the Nighthawks' eight yard line, but three penalties and a 16-yard sack of Reed pushed Salt Lake all the way back to their own 12.
Wichita Falls claimed their sixth win of the season with the 39-33 win.
Down 39-21 in the fourth quarter, the Screaming Eagles scored on a pair of five-yard run from Reed with 12:30 and 6:45 remaining. They were unable to convert the two-point conversion following either touchdown.
The Nighthawks scored first on a one-yard run from Charles McCullum and went up 9-0 on Rockne Belmonte's 25-yard field goal. Salt Lake scored on a seven-yard run from James Poole with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.
Wichita Falls scored on a 24-yard run from Tyler Williams and a 25-yard interception return for touchdown from Norris Wrenn to go up 22-7 with 11:34 left in the second quarter.
The Screaming Eagles answered on Reed's 12-yard pass to Poole, but the Nighthawks would score twice to go into halftime with a 32-15 advantage. Each team added a touchdown to their tally during the third quarter.
Salt Lake held the advantage in total offense, 283 yards to 214, including a 221 to 142 yard edge in the passing game. The teams combined for 22 accepted penalties for 229 total yards.
McCullum completed 15 of 27 passes for the Nighthawks, for 153 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for two touchdowns. Tyler Williams rushed 14 times for 56 yards and a score. Phillip Barnett had six catches for 72 yards and a touchdown, and Jordan Jolly added five grabs for 48 yards. On the defensive side, Michael Carter led his team in total tackles with 7.5, while Wrenn added a fumble recovery to his interception. Walter Thomas added a sack.
Reed went 17 of 27 for 205 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed eight times for 33 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Poole rushed nine times for 21 yards, and caught three passes for 25 yards and two scores. Devin Mahina led the Screaming Eagles in receiving with five grabs for 72 yards, and Cy Strahm had five grabs for 44 yards. Brock Lutes had 4.5 tackles. Salt Lake recorded its first sacks of the season with Ben Compton tallying 1.5 sacks and David Gilbert adding a half sack.
The Nighthawks (6-1) host the Cedar Rapids Titans (1-6) on April 14 at 5:05 p.m. (pacific). The Screaming Eagles (1-5) will be at home against the Arizona Rattlers (3-3) on April 14 with a 6 p.m. (pacific) kickoff.
