ANALYSIS
Iowa and Arizona made the leaps from the Arena Football League to the Indoor Football League in 2015 and 2017, respectively. The Barnstormers enjoyed their best IFL season in 2017, finishing 13-3 overall and with a playoff berth. They would come up short in the United Conference championship to the Sioux Falls Storm. Sioux Falls would go on the United Bowl, where the were defeated by the Rattlers. Arizona stumbled out of the gate in its inaugural IFL season, but finished the season on a 10-2 tear. The Rattlers dispensed of the Nebraska Danger in the Intense Conference championship to earn their trip to the United Bowl.
The Rattlers opened this season with a United Bowl rematch against the Storm in Phoenix. Using a concentrated defensive effort in the second half, they were able to clip the Storm, 39-33. Verlon Reed Jr., who came over to the Rattlers after a stellar rookie season with the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles. Reed fell to an undisclosed injury early in the game and was relieved by Jeff Ziemba. The injury announcement came from head coach Kevin Guy during a post-game interview. Guy stated that Ziemba "would be okay" after he received more repetitions in practice. Reed has been placed on Short-Term IR and the Rattlers have signed Sean Goldrich, who played last season with the Colorado Crush.
Ziemba completed just 38.5 percent of his passes, but was effective in the second half when Arizona pulled away for the win. He threw for 78 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, and rushed for a touchdown. The Rattlers are likely to rely on the running game, featuring a heavy dose of Darrell Monroe. The running back from Western Arizona College leads the IFL in rushing with 18 carries for 87 yards and also scored a touchdown. He also is a threat as a receiver out of the backfield, catching two passes for 31 yards in the opener. Anthony Amos is the veteran of the receiving group, and scored on a 31-yard strike from Ziemba. Chris McAllister led the defensive effort with 7 total tackles, as well as 3.5 tackles for loss. Joshua Gordon recorded a sack in the opener. Sawyer Petre made his only field goal attempt (25 yards) and 4 of 5 of his extra point tries.
The Barnstormers' season-opening win over the Green Bay Blizzard featured the largest point disparity of the young 2018 season (21 points). Travis Partridge is gone from last year's team, but Drew Powell came over from the Nebraska Danger during the offseason. Ryan Balentine and Brady Roland returned to the team this season and are reliable targets in the passing game. The defense surrendered just a single touchdown in the second half of the season-opening win over the Blizzard. The Barnstormers outscored the Blizzard 27-7 in the final 33:21 of that game. Iowa is looking to get back to the playoffs, and facing this early season test against the Rattlers is a challenging first step.
Powell completed nearly 77 percent of his passes in the opener, for 208 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also rushed 13 times for 48 yards. Powell has the potential to emerge as a top quarterback in the IFL this season. Balentine was spectacular against Green Bay, catching 10 passes for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Expect to see Powell look to Balentine often against the Rattlers. Roland is no slouch, having caught 6 balls for 62 yards and a touchdown in the opener. Jonathan Buartes rounds out the receiving group. Zachary Allen's 12 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss led the Barnstormers' defense. Bryce Enyard will look to be opportunistic. The Northwest Missouri State University product added an interception to his 5 total tackles against the Blizzard. Cody Barber is perfect this season, making all five of his extra point attempts and both of his field goals with a long of 30 yards.
