GREEN BAY, WI - The Sioux Falls Storm scored 20 points to open the fourth quarter and pulled away from the Green Bay Blizzard for a 39-23 win in week 5 of Indoor Football League play.
The Storm improved to 3-1 on the 2018 IFL season, while the Blizzard fell to 0-5.
Sioux Falls scored first on a 29-yard field goal from Miles Bergner. That would be the only points of the first quarter, giving the Storm a 3-0 lead.
The Blizzard took the lead on quarterback Raymond Cotton's 11-yard run with 11:07 to go in the second quarter. Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown rushed for a 1-yard run to put the Storm up 9-7. Jeff Budzien's 23-yard field goal put Green Bay up 10-9 at the 1:07 mark of the first half. Brown's 9-yard run put the Storm up 16-10 at the half.
Bergner put the Storm up 19-10 nine minutes into the third quarter. Green Bay narrowed the Storm lead to 19-17 on a 1-yard run by Serge Trezy.
The Storm went on a tear to open the fourth quarter. Receiver Mike Tatum scored on a 7-yard run, then caught a 22-yard pass from Brown. Judd Harrold's 26-yard touchdown catch from Brown with one minute left put the Storm up 39-17. Christian Lemay's 1-yard run accounted for the 39-23 final result.
Twenty-one penalties were accepted in the game. The Storm were called 10 times for 64 yards in infractions, while the Blizzard were flagged 11 times for 87 yards. The Storm outgained the Blizzard in total offense, 205 yards to 151, with a 93 to 63 edge in the passing game. The Storm also held a 112- to 88-yard advantage on the ground.
Brown was effective, completing 8 of his 15 attempts for 93 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 61 yards on 13 carries with a pair of touchdowns. Lyle McCombs rushed 10 times for 44 yards. Tatum caught 4 passes for 50 yards and a touchdown, while Harrold had 2 grabs for 29 yards and a score. All of Jabari Gorman's 7 total tackles were solo tackles. Owen Williams had 2 sacks for the Storm.
Cotton completed 8 of 14 passes for 78 yards and ran for a touchdown. Trezy had 54 yards on 10 carries to go along with his touchdown run in the third quarter. Jereme Jones caught 3 passes for 44 yards, while Chris Malott caught 3 passes for 29 yards. Josh Jenkins' 7 total tackles paced the Blizzard on defense, and Manny Asprilla had 2 pass break ups.
The Storm will visit the Nebraska Danger on March 30, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. pacific (7 p.m. central). The Blizzard have two bye weeks. They will look to regroup in week 8 as they host the Cedar Rapids Titans on April 14 for a 3:05 p.m. pacific kickoff (5:05 p.m. central).
