FINAL - Rattlers 54, Titans 19
3/31/18 --
PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers defense stopped the Cedar Rapids Titans on five of their six fourth down conversion attempts, and their offensive efficiency was nearly flawless as they blew out the Titans, 54-19, tonight at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
The Rattlers improved to 4-1 on the season, into a tie with the Nebraska Danger atop the IFL standings. At this point, Arizona would own the tiebreaker due to their 62-49 win over the Danger on March 24. The Titans fell to 1-5.
Cedar Rapids missed a pair of field goals to start the first quarter. The first came on their opening drive, and the second came following a fumble recovery which gave them the ball right back. On their second possession, the Rattlers got on the board on an 11-yard pass from Jeff Ziemba to Jarrod Harrington. Arizona attempted to catch the Titans off guard by trying an onside kick, but it was recovered by Tyler Thomas, who would run it in on the next play to tie the game at 7-7. The Rattlers came right back, scoring on a 32-yard bomb from Ziemba to Anthony Amos.
Ziemba and Amos hooked up again for a 23-yard touchdown pass and the Rattlers were up by two scores, 21-7. After recovering a fumble, the Titans drove into the red zone. Jake Medlock's desperation heave on fourth down was hauled in by Connor Hollenback while diving over the dasher board in the end zone. The Rattlers scored as time expired in the opening half when Ziemba found Amos just inside the end zone from four yards out. The Titans challenged Whether Amos had possession of the ball in the end zone, and the referees upheld the play. Arizona went into the break with a lead of 27-13.
Jamal Miles' 6-yard touchdown catch from Ziemba opened the half for the Rattlers and extended their lead to 34-13. Ziemba and Miles connected later in the third quarter on an 8-yard touchdown and the rout was on.
Medlock ended the Titans' scoring drought when he rushed from a yard out 42 seconds into the fourth quarter. His rush attempt for the two-point conversion was short and the Rattlers' lead was 41-19. Ziemba found Chris McAllister for a 1-yard touchdown strike in the back of the end zone. It was the first receiving touchdown of the season for McAllister, who plays defensive lineman for Arizona. The Rattlers went up 55-19 on Desmond Epps' 4-yard run with 3:53 left in the fourth.
The Rattlers accumulated 239 yards of total offense to the Titans' 200. The Rattlers intercepted Medlock once, while the Titans recovered three Arizona fumbles. Cedar Rapids was flagged 11 times for 63 yards, while Arizona committed 4 penalties for 12 yards.
Ziemba had his most efficient game of the season, completing 16 or 22 passes for 172 yards and 7 touchdowns. All are season highs for him. Miles rushed 5 times for 40 yards, while catching 4 passes for 27 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Amos had 4 receptions for 67 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nathan Lindsey led the potent Rattlers defense with 7 total tackles. Arkieth Brown had an interception and McAllister recorded a sack on the very next offensive series after his touchdown catch.
Medlock completed 18 or 38 passes for 136 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Tyler Thomas rushed for 37 yards on 9 carries. Marquel Wade caught 5 passes for 53 yards, while Hollenbeck had 5 grabs for 44 yards and a score. Jordan Smith recorded 6 receptions for 29 yards. Ricarlo Bell had a sack. Moses White recovered 2 fumbles, while Daren Wilson had another recovery.
