FINAL - Rattlers 84, Titans 83

PHOENIX, AZ - If an indoor football fan wanted to see some points, that fan got their wish tonight.
Darrell Monroe eclipsed the Indoor Football League's rushing touchdowns per game, and scored on a late touchdown to complete a rally to give the Rattlers an 84-83 win in week 10 of the IFL season at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
Monroe's 11 touchdown rushes, all coming from six yards or less, set a new IFL record. The previous record was seven.
With the win, the Rattlers improved to a league-best 7-1 record, while the Titans fell to 1-7. The Rattlers never held a lead in the game until Monroe scored with two seconds left. The 84 and 83 points are the top two point totals in a single game in the league this season. Consequently, the 167 total points is also a high for the league.
The Titans got on the board on the first play of the game, courtesy of Raphael Lawson-Gayle's 44-yard run. The Rattlers wasted no time in responding as Dezon Epps returned the ensuing kickoff for the score. Cedar Rapids went up 14-7 on Jake Medlock's 1 yard pass to Connor Hollenbeck. The Titans went up 17-7 on Zeke Arevalo's 17-yard field goal with 3:25 left in the opening quarter.

Monroe countered with a six-yard run to make the score 24-21 in favor of the Rattlers. Arizona tried an onside kick, which they recovered when Arkeith Brown covered the kick. However, Monroe fumbled in the red zone. The Titans capitalized, scoring on a one-yard run from Wade. Monroe rushed for his thrid touchdown of the game, of three yards to once again draw the Rattlers to within three points at 31-24. Medlock then found Javon Bell for a six-yard touchdown with 31 second left. The Titans then forced a fumble of Rattlers quarterback Jeff Ziemba and James Calhoun scooped it up and ran in from 14 yards to give the Titans a 45-28 lead which would endure through halftime.

Monroe scored on a pair of two-yard runs to pull the Rattlers to within three points at 52-49 with 5:11 left in the third quarter. Lawson-Gayle's four-yard run extended the lead to 10, and Wade's 17-yard touchdown from Medlock put the Titans up by 17 at 66-49 with 2:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. Monroe struck again on a six yard run and the Rattlers' deficit was at 10 entering the final quarter.
The Rattlers attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by Jordan Smith of the Titans, who ran it in from eight yards out. Monroe scored on a one-yard run, then capped it with a run for the two-point conversion. The Titans led 74-64. After Zeke Arevalo's 33-yard field goal, Monroe drew the Rattlers to within 77-71. Medlock then found Wade on a 34-yard strike and the Titans were up by 12.
Monroe ran in from two yards to pull the Rattlers to within five points at 83-78. The Rattlers stopped the Titans for the first time in the game, giving Arizona the ball at their own two yard line. The Rattlers were able to drive deep into Titans territory. No surprise on this night, Monroe ran it in from a yard out with 2 seconds left. The Rattlers attempted a two-point conversion, but the run failed. The Titans were unable to complete the ensuing kickoff return, giving the Rattlers the one-point win.
The teams finished with an identical 349 yards of total offense. The Titans held the edge in passing with 210 yards to 159, while the Rattlers had the advantage in rushing yards, 190 to 139. The Titans were penalized eight times for 45 yards, and the Rattlers were flagged seven times for 38 yards.
It was all the Darrell Monroe show as the veteran from Western Arizona College gained 140 yards on 29 carries to go with his 11 touchdown rushes. Monroe also caught a game-high 7 passes for 65 yards. Ziemba completed 19 of 25 passes for 166 yards and an interception. Jamal Miles rushed 5 times for 31 yards while catching 6 balls for 42 yards. Dezmon Epps, who had a kickoff return for touchdown, averaged 32.9 yards on his kick returns. Davontae Merriweather and Justin Shirk led the Rattlers defense with 6 total tackles each.
Medlock had a strong game. He completed 12 of 13 passes, with the only incompletion coming late in the fourth quarter. Medlock threw for 210 yards and 6 touchdowns, and ran 5 times for 26 yards. Wade scored on 3 of his 5 receptions while accumulating 124 yards. Bell had 5 receptions for 77 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Calhoun added 11 total tackles to his interception returned for a touchdown. Ify Asoluka has 10 total tackles, and Ricarlo Bell tallied a sack for the Titans' defense.
The teams will meet again in week 11 with the Rattlers making their only trip of the season to to Cedar Rapids on May 5. Kickoff in that one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m.).
