PHOENIX, AZ - In perhaps one of the wildest finishes in the Indoor Football League this season, Drew Powell’s three-yard run and two-point conversion pass to Brady Roland in overtime, gave the Iowa Barnstormers a 69-68 win tonight over the Arizona Rattlers at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
The Rattlers sent the game into overtime on Sawyer Petre’s 17-yard field goal as time expired in regulation. After 60 minutes, the game was knotted at 61-61 heading into the extra quarter. Arizona drove 20 yards in five plays, scoring on a three-yard pass from Jeff Ziemba to Anthony Amos. Petre’s extra point put the Rattlers up 68-61. It was then Iowa’s turn in the extra period.
The Barnstormers drove from the Rattlers‘ 20 yard line (per IFL overtime rules) in seven plays, capped by Powell’s touchdown run.
The Barnstormers improved to 8-2 on the season, just a half game back of the Rattlers at 9-2. Iowa has already clinched the season series with a 2-0 lead with one game left to play, in week 15 at Des Moines. The winner of that game could very well go on to have the top seed in the playoffs.
Arizona has yet to defeat Iowa in an IFL game. The Rattlers trail the Barnstormers 3-0 overall in league action. The teams met numerous times during their coinciding tenures in the Arena Football League.
The Rattlers got on the board first, scoring on a two-yard run from Dylan Peebles on their first possession. The Barnstormers tied it at 7-7 three-and-a-half minutes later on Ryan Balentine’s four-yard touchdown catch from Powell. Ziemba found Amos for a six-yard touchdown pass which give the Rattlers a 14-7 lead, which endured to the end of the opening quarter.
Powell hit B.J. Butler for 11 yards 45 seconds into the second quarter and the game was once again knotted. Peebles scored his second touchdown of the game, a six-yard run, and the Rattlers were back up by a touchdown at the 11:48 mark of the second quarter. Powell scored on a seven-yard run, but Cody Barber’s extra [point try was no good, leaving the Barnstormers down 21-20 mid way through the quarter. A 17-yard run by Ziemba put the Rattlers up by eight points. Powell then hit Balentine for an 18-yard touchdown, and Powell rushed for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 28-28 with 35 seconds remaining in the half. The Rattlers scored on an eight-yard pass from Ziemba to Amos on the last play of the half, and Arizona went into intermission up 35-28.
Roland’s 17-yard touchdown catch from Powell drew Iowa to within a point just over three minutes into the third quarter, but the Rattlers came right back on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ziemba to Jamal Miles. Powell found Roland again, this time for 45 yards. Powell’s pass for the two-point conversion sailed high and the barnstormers trailed 42-40 with 9:18 remaining in the third. Petre’s 19-yard field goal extended the Rattlers lead to 45-40 .
Iowa took their first lead of the game at 46-45, on the first play of the fourth quarter. Powell’s two-point pass attempt was no good. Ziemba found Dezmon Epps on a 29-yard touchdown strike, but Ziemba’s attempt to rush for the two-point conversion failed. Powell countered with a one-yard run, along with a rush for the two-point conversion, to give the Barnstormers a 54-51 lead with 4:21 remaining in regulation. Arizona went up 58-54 with 50 seconds remaining on Ziemba’s four-yard run. The Barnstormers responded with a nine-yard run from Donavan Williams, giving the Rattlers the ball with 22 seconds left, which set up Petre’s game-tying field goal with no time left in regulation.
Statistically, the game was expectedly even. The Barnstormers held a slight edge in total offense, 330 yards to 315, including an advantage in the running game, 139 yards to 90. The Rattlers had 255 passing yards to the Barnstormers’ 191. Arizona was penalized 6 times for 37 yards, while Iowa was flagged 5 times for 31 yards. Neither team turned the ball over.
Powell was nearly perfect on the day, completing 19 of 21 passes for 191 yards and 5 touchdowns, while rushing 18 times for 194 yards and 4 scores. Williams added 33 yards off of 10 carries to go along with his touchdown run. Roland caught 4 balls for 77 yards and a pair of scores, while Balentine had 7 grabs for 68 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Sheldon Augustine added 7 catches for 35 yards. Rocky Hayes led the Baarnstormers’ defense with 7.5 total tackles, and Zachary Allen had 7 total tackles and a half a sack. Keith Jones, Jr. tallied 1.5 sacks on the day.
Ziemba went 22 of 27 for 237 yards and 5 touchdown tosses. He also rushed 5 times for 35 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Making his first start in place of the injured Darrell Monroe, Peebles finished with 13 carries for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns. Epps led all receivers with 80 yards off of 8 receptions along with a touchdown. Miles had 4 receptions for 76 yards and a score, and Amos finished with 8 grabs for 72 yards and 3 touchdowns. Davontae Merriweather and Dillon Winfrey paced the Rattlers defense with 7 total tackles each. Justin Shirk recorded a sack.
These teams will meet once again this season, on June 2, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
