Welcome to the 2018 NBA Draft.
For the first time in their 51-year history, the Phoenix Suns will select first, as they were awarded the top pick in the NBA Draft Lottery. The Suns have selected second overall twice, in 1969 and 1987. The Sacramento Kings will select second overall, followed by the Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies. Aside from the Draft Lottery, the draft order is established in reverse order of the overall regular season standings.
The Portland Trail Blazers, featured on this site, have the 24th pick in the first round. Their second round selection was traded to the Denver Nuggets in the deal which brought center Jusuf Nurkic to Portland in February 2017.
The Blazers have had the 24th selection three with the most notable selection at that position coming in 1985 when they picked Terry Porter, a 6'3" guard out of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Porter went on two become one of the team's more notable historical players, starting at point guard for a decade for the team, including in 1990 and 1992 when the Blazers reached the NBA Finals. Porter is now the head coach of the University of Portland Pilots men's basketball team and an ambassador for the Blazers.
Also selected by the Blazers with the 24th pick was Lithuania center Arvydas Sabonis in 1986. The 7'3" Sabonis played for his native team over a span of nine years before joining the Blazers in 1995 though 2001, and returning for a season in 2002 (He played internationally during the 2001-02 season). He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on August 12, 2011 for his entire body of work over the course of his career..
His number 30 (along with Bob Gross) is retired and features a banner hanging in the rafters at Moda Center at the Rose Garden. Also at selection number 24, the Blazers took forward Keith Herron in in 1978, but Herron never suited up for the Blazers.
The Philadelphia 76ers have the most selections with six, while the Miami Head and Toronto Raptors do not have any selections in this year's draft. That, of course, does not count any trades which may be conducted up to, and during, the draft.
The draft was Thursday, June 21 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The Phoenix suns selected C Deandre Ayton with the first overall pick.
