Hey everybody of SCtoC, it is me spiderfan here and with Week 14 of the NFL season in the books (homage to Dave Dameshek there) it is time for my Random Thoughts & Stuff column. Let us begin!
Patrick Mahomes, the GORN
You often hear GOAT to refer a number of athletes across sports. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Tom Brady are usually the names that are mentioned. Something you never hear? The GORN, as in the greatest of right now. Even I, someone who was high on Mahomes before the draft and also said before this season that we has the truth, am taken aback by his greatness. Seriously, if you aren't amazed by this play I don't know what to say to you (click Watch on YouTube):
Or how about the now world famous no-look pass?
IMO, there is no better QB in the NFL right now than Patrick Mahomes, now next year Mahomes' play could fall off and we might forget about him. But, for right now he is the greatest.
Vikings fire John DeFilippo (and the rest of the bunch should have gone with him)
If you've read my column before, you know I think Kirk Cousins is overrated and that the Vikings made a gross miscalculation in not resigning Case Keenum and for anyone who has played Madden you know that if you have cap space to spend on players in free agency, you want to maximize those dollars and make your team the best overall team possible. Vikings HC Mike Zimmer and (I imagine) GM Rick Spielman decided "Nah, we aren't good enough, so we are gonna throw all our eggs in the Kirk Cousins basket and because Cousins isn't a folk hero like Keenum we can take more of the credit when we win the Super Bowl." Guess what boys? That arrogance of yours did not pay any dividends.
After the game on Monday Night, the Vikings fired their OC John DeFilippo and replaced him with Vikings QB coach Kevin Stefanski. Here is the thing with that: An already mediocre offense is IMO actually going to get worse now that he is gone. Why? Because Mike Zimmer in his brilliance, is going to have say in how the offense is run profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/12/11/mike-zimmer-on-john-defilippo-firing-i-dont-want-the-season-wasted/ and Zimmer before becoming Vikings HC was a long time defensive coordinator. If there is anyone who shouldn't have input in how an offense is run it is someone like Zimmer. If this current Vikings regime gets fired after the season, consider that football karma and as I've said all year long the Vikings deserve it.
Do you believe in miracles involving mammals that are kinda sorta similar to fish and sometimes confused with porpoises?! YES!
In a back and forth game with playoff implications between the Patriots and Dolphins it appeared that there was going to an exciting finish. I don't think anyone in their wildest dreams expected THIS to happen:
I would like to apologize to the Miami Dolphins for my outward mocking of them. I thought their culture change was going to produce at max 3 wins and result in a new regime. This was a team that looked like it was collapsing after starting 3-0. They may not make the playoffs, but they certainly exceeded my expectations and I have to give credit where credit is due. Congrats guys.
The Steelers have been stolen once again
The Raiders played like they did against the Chiefs and beat the Steelers. For all that he has accomplished Big Ben still has never won a game in Oakland and now the Steelers are now on a 3 game losing streak with games against the Patriots and Saints upcoming. This is a team that went from being in contention for a first round bye (after digging themselves out of a hole) to a team that is going to have to fight hard to even make the playoffs (now digging themselves yet another hole). If I'm in Steel Country I am not a happy camper, needless to say.
Other thoughts:
-I think after all these years it is safe to say Mark Sanchez is not good.
-Tom Coughlin might become the head coach during this season if the Jags play like they did on TNF again.
-I thought that after being on a losing streak (It was 3 games a couple weeks ago) Ron Rivera's job would be in jeopardy. Now barring an impressive late season rally (the Panthers have to beat the Saints twice), I think he is going to be fired. With what he has accomplished I imagine he'll be in another spot next year though.
-A game to keep your eyes on during Week 15 is Packers-Bears. Because after that the Packers play the Jets and Lions and would be good in position to win out thus potentially putting them in the playoffs depending on how things shake out. Aaron Rodgers is going to want to show everyone that he was right in wanting McCarthy fired and with the Packers beating the Falcons, step one of the show off tour is already done.
-Mullens Mania has returned... finally.
-The Seahawks and Bears defenses are legit folks.
-With the Ostriches beating the Eagles, Coach Ostrich's return is guaranteed at this point IMO. Thanks Amari!
With all of that said, my RT&S for this week are now in the SCtoC archives. I hope ya enjoyed reading it. This is spiderfan out.
