SAN DIEGO, CA - A stout Green Bay Blizzard defense forced three turnovers, two of them returned for touchdowns in a span of less than 20 seconds, as the Blizzard captured their first road win of the season, 53-45, over the Stan Diego Strike Force tonight in at Pechanga Arena.
Green Bay moved to 2-2 with the win, while the Strike Force fell to 0-4. San Diego, one of two expansion teams this season in the Indoor Football League, reported an attendance of 1,817 in their second home game of the season.
The first quarter was a back-and forth with the teams matching one another score for score. The Blizzard struck first on Lenorris Footman's 24-yard strike to Levi Copelin. The Strike Force Struck back on a two-yard plunge by quarterback Derrick Bernard. Footman then found B.J. Hill on a screen pass to the left side. The two yard score put Green Bay up 13-7. Bernard hit Julian Stafford for a three-yard touchdown to put San Diego up by a point. Rameses Owens broke through the Strike Force defense for a 24-yard scamper, but the Blizzard's lead was short lived. Barnard and Stafford connected again, this time for 30 yards. San Diego led 21-20 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Strike Force increased that lead to eight points when Bernard connected with Marques Rodgers for a 14-yard touchdown. The Blizzard came back on a six-yard run from Footman. It was then the Blizzard defense's turn to get into the act. They picked up Bernard on consecutive plays, returning both for touchdowns. Joe Powell's 20 yard return, and Bakari Triggs' return of 30 yards gave Green Bay a 41-28 lead with 47 second remaining. San Diego was able to make it a one-score game when Bernard found Rodgers for three yards as time expired. The Blizzard led 41-35 at intermission.
San Diego had the ball first to open the second half, but Bernard threw his third interception of the night, right into the hands of Powell in the end zone. Both offenses stagnated in the third quarter until Cody Barber extended the Blizzard's lead to 44-35 on a 40-yard field goal at the 3:23 mark.
Ernesto Lacayo pulled the Strike Force to within six points with a 24-yard field goal four minutes into the fourth quarter. Owens gave the Blizzard a 50-38 lead midway through the quarter with a two-yard run. San Diego scored on a seven-yard run from George Moreira with 5:55 left. Green Bay extended their lead to eight points on Barber's 27-yard field goal with 58 seconds left. The Strike Force had one last chance, but a scrambling Bernard's heave into the end zone was knocked down by Marquez Gollman of the Blizzard.
The Strike Force actually held the advantage in total offense, 201 yards to 83. They had 201 passing yards while the Blizzard made their impact on the ground with 106 rushing yards. San Diego was flagged 12 times for 65 yards and Green Bay was penalized eight times for 101 yards. The Blizzard also recorded four sacks in the game.
Footman completed nine of 18 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed nine times for 43 yards and another score. Owens racked up 60 yards on 12 carries with two trips to the end zone. Keshaun Taylor caught a pair of pases for 27 yards, and Copelin and Hill each had a touchdown grab. Dayshawn Taylor led the Blizzard defense with nine total tackles, and Deldrick Canty recorded a pair of sacks. Triggs intercepted two balls, and Powell had one pick. Each returned an interception for a touchdown.
Bernard was 18 of 34 for 201 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for a score. Stafford caught six balls for 95 yards with two touchdowns, while Rodgers had five grabs for 61 yards and two scores. Deshawn Hawthorn, Terrence Fullum and Mikell Mair each had five total tackles for the Strike Force defense.
The Blizzard are on the road in week 6 to visit the Quad City Steamwheelers on March 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). The Strike Force will visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls on March 31 with kickoff set for 3:05 p.m. pacific (5:05 p.m. central).
