ANALYSIS
In what SCtoC is dubbing the 2019 Expansion Bowl Series, this is the second entry and the first which will be played in Tucson. The Sugar Skulls went up early and put the 65-44 win away in the fourth quarter of their week 2 match up in San Diego. Both teams have some experience under their respective belts since then. The Strike Force came within a score and two-point conversion of sending their game last week into the overtime, but were unable to do so as they fell to the Green Bay Blizzard, 53-45. San Diego has scored in the 40s in all four of their losses, and would like to increase that here and pick up their first win of the season. The 53 points against the Blizzard was their best defensive output of the season. Tucson got out to a 2-0 record before running into the Arizona Rattlers two weeks ago in Phoenix (the Sugar Skulls are coming off a bye). The 63-28 thumping to the Rattlers should serve as a benchmark of where the team is and where they need to be to become competitive against the higher echelon of the IFL. Both Sugar Skulls wins have come over teams which are still looking for their first victories of the season. This battle of expansion squads also pits two former NFL defensive players against each other as head coaches; Burt Grossman of the Strike Force and Marcus Coleman of the Sugar Skulls.
Derrick Bernard is one of the best pure passers in the IFL, as he leads the league with 200 yards per game and is second with 15 touchdown tosses. The downside is that he's thrown a league-high nine interceptions and lost a fumble. Cutting down on those turnovers is the simple key to success. It should be noted that he also has thrown more passes than any QB in the league at 131, and several when the team is playing catch up ball. Bernard also has three rushing scores on the season. At just 5.5 carries per game, George Moreira, Jr. could probably be put into more of a prominent role in the rushing game. That could take some heat off his quarterback. Moreira has five rushing touchdowns to his credit. Julian Stafford and Marques Rodgers are solid targets in the passing game. Stafford is second in the IFL in receiving yards and touchdowns with 289 and eight, respectively. Rodgers, who leads the IFL in all-purpose yards with 641, has caught 20 passes for 288 yards (third in the league) and four touchdowns. Kenric Young, Jr. is off to the AFL's Baltimore Brigade and Timothy Moten being released, Mikell Mair's 22 tackles lead the team. Terrence Fullum has 15 tackles and a the team's only sack. One bright spot for the Strike Force has been kicker Ernesto Lacayo, who has converted on all 24 of his point after attempts and is four of seven on field goal tries with a long of 31 yards.
The Sugar Skulls largely utilize a dual-quarterback system with former Green Bay Blizzard Matt Behrendt and former Cedar Rapids Titan Jake Medlock alternating at the helm. Behrendt comes into this one with a 64.4 percent completion percentage and nine touchdowns. Eight of those scoring tosses came in week 3 against the Bismarck Bucks. The more effective rusher of the two, he averages 47.0 yards per game and has two touchdowns on the ground. Medlock is completing61.5 percent of his passes for 198 yards with five touchdowns in two games. Neither QB has thrown an interception. Mike Jones averages 53 rush yards per game and has hit the end zone four times, while Shadrach Thornton has 16 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown in one appearance. Tucson has a talented trio of receivers. Shaq Curenton leads the team with 158 yards and five touchdowns, while Donovan Rasberry has 15 catches for 141 yards and three scores. Brandon Sampson adds 12 catches for 146 yards and a pair of scores. Zach Allen's 10.7 tackles per game lead the IFL. He also has a sack and a tackle for loss. Dee Maggitt, Jr. has a pair of interceptions, and Cam Gaddis has also recorded a pick. Keith Jones, Jr. also has a sack to his credit. Diego Marquez has made 21 of 22 extra point attempts, but has yet to convert a field goal through the team's three games.
