PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers reeled off 21 straight points over an 11-minute span in the third and fourth quarters to take down the Sioux Falls Storm, 58-40, tonight at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
A run by Jeff Ziemba, a pass from Sheldon Augustin to Jarrod Harrington and a pass from Ziemba to Jamal Miles sealed the deal for the Rattlers as they turned a four-point lead into a 25-point advantage midway through the final quarter.
Arizona moved into a first-place tie atop the IFL standings with the Iowa Barnstormers at 4-0. The Storm dropped to 4-1 with the loss. It was the 200th career indoor football victory for Rattlers head coach Kevin Guy dating back to 1980. He is in his 15th season at the helm of the team.
Arizona jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a nine-yard pass from Verlon Reed, Jr. to Harrington, only to see the Storm soar back on Brandon Sheperd's 38-yard catch from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. Jabre Lolley's one-yard run gave the Rattlers a 14-13 lead with 8:05 left in the opening quarter. Sioux Falls pulled to within a point when Calen Campbell, making his first start, rushed in from eight yards out. The Rattlers held a slim 14-13 lead after one quarter.
The Storm went up 20-14 on Campbell's six-yard run early in the second quarter, but the Rattlers came back with a pair of touchdown runs to take the lead. The first was a 10-yard draw up the middle from Ziemba, and the second came on a four-yard run around the end from Miles. The teams traded field goals late in the quarter, with Miles Bergner hitting from 38 yards for the Storm and Jimmy Camacho from 17 yards for the Rattlers. Arizona led 30-23 at the break.
Sioux Falls had the ball first in the second half, but a fumble was recovered in the end zone by Arizona's Davontae Merriweather. Campbell narrowed the score once again, returning the ensuing kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown. Bergner added a field goal and the Rattlers lead was just four at 37-33 with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter.
That's when the bottom fell out for Sioux Falls. Ziemba's two-yard plunge put the Rattlers up 44-33 by the end of the quarter.
Arizona continued the onslaught in the fourth, with Harrington's two-yard touchdown reception from wide receiver Sheldon Augustine, who was just signed by the team earlier in the week. Ziemba hit Miles for 23 yards to put the Rattlers up 58-33 with 7:15 to play in the fourth. The Storm added a one-yard run from Shepherd before the Rattlers were able to run out the clock.
Reed started the game at quarterback for Arizona, but went down with an undisclosed injury in the first quarter. Ziemba, who started the majority of the Rattlers games last season, stepped in to finish the game. The two quarterbacks had been alternating playing time through the team's first three games.
The Rattlers nearly doubled the Storm in total offense, 247 yards to 127. They held advantages of 93 yards to 57 in the rushing game and 154 yards to 77 in the passing game. Arizona was penalized 16 times for 132 yards, while Sioux Falls was lagged 12 times for 77 yards.
Ziemba finished 12 of 17 for 143 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed six times for 11 yards and two scores. Prior to the injury, Reed had completed his only pass for a touchdown and rushed three times for 32 yards. Harrington finished with six receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Dezmon Epps had five grabs for 44 yards and Jamal Miles had three catches for 35 yards and a touchdown, as well as a score on the ground. Merriweather finished with 10 total tackles and the fumble recovery for touchdown. Allen Chapman and Phillip Henry each had an interception, while Ricky Wyatt, Jr. tallied 1.5 sacks.
Brown, who was last week's IFL Offensive Player of the Week, struggled while completing six of 13 passes for 86 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Campbell was excellent in his first start, rushing seven times for 33 yards and two touchdowns, as well as returning a kickoff for a touchdown. Sheperd caught two passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Damian Ford added three catches for 29 yards. Matt McKoy's eight total tackles led the way for the Storm defense. He also forced a fumble and intercepted a pass. Trey Dickerson also had an interception, and Charles Williams recovered a fumble.
Next up for the Storm is a visit to the Bismarck Bucks in North Dakota on April 6. Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. pacific (6:05 p.m. central). It will be the second meeting of the season between the teams. The Rattlers will be at home to host the expansion San Diego Strike Force on April 6 with kickoff scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central).
