BISMARCK, ND - The Sioux Falls Storm outscored the Bismarck Bucks 26-0 in the third quarter to help propel them to a 64-31 win over tonight at the Bismarck Events Center in week 7 of the Indoor Football League season.
It is the second win for the Storm over the Bucks in just over three weeks. Sioux Falls bested Bismarck 52-18 on arch 16 in North Dakota. Sioux Falls moved to 5-1 on the season; a half game behind the Iowa Barnstormers and Arizona Rattlers in the IFL standings. Bismarck fell to 0-5 on the season.
The Bucks found the scoreboard on their second play from scrimmage, a 20-yard touchdown pass from Homer Causey to Frederick Abraham. Storm quarterback Lorenzo Brown, Jr. countered with a pair of touchdown tosses; a 31-yarder to Damian Ford and a 28-yard strike to Kent Shelby. The Storm led 14-7 at the and of the opening quarter.
John Gibbs' nine-yard scoring pass to Brandynn Clark narrowed the margin, but Blake Levin's point after try was blocked by Malcolm Goines, who returned it to the end zone for a defensive two-point conversion. Sioux Falls led 16-13 with 1:23 left in the first half Brown found Ford for a 30-yard touchdown to extend the Storm's lead to 23-13 with just under a minute to go. Clark found himself on the receiving end of another long touchdown pass from Gibbs; this one from 26 yards and the Bucks' deficit was just four points. With five seconds remaining, the Storm started a string of 33 straight points when Calen Campbell rushed in from three yards out.
Campbell repeated his three yard effort on the Storm's first drive of the third quarter and Sioux Falls was off to the races. Two-and-a-half minutes later Brown launched a bomb of 45 yards to Brandon Shepherd to put the Storm up by 25. Campbell's 33-yard touchdown run at the 4:11 minute mark of the quarter extended the advantage to 50-19. Sioux Falls added another score in the third when Brown found Shelby for a 38-yard touchdown.
The Bucks made some noise in the final quarter when Causey found Clark for a two-yard score. But, the Storm responded with a 10-yard run from Campbell with 11:55 to go. Preston Hamlette's nine-yard run closed things out with 2:45 to go which accounted for the final margin of 64-31.
Campbell was spectacular in his second start. He rushed 16 times for 110 yards and four touchdowns. The performance came a week after he rushed for a pair of scores and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the Storm's 58-40 loss to the Rattlers during week 6 in Phoenix.
Sioux Falls had a decided edge in total offense, 361 yards to 206 for Bismarck. The Storm held advantages of 98 yards in the passing game and 57 yards on the ground. The Bucks were penalized eight times for 66 yards, while the Storm were flagged three times for 37 yards. The Storm defense forced three Bucks turnovers.
Brown went nine of 15 for 213 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Shelby had his best game in a Storm uniform with three catches for 88 yards and two scores. Shepherd caught four balls for 75 yards and a touchdown and Ford finished with three receptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Matt McKoy paced the Storm defense with nine tackles, and T.H. Neal finished with seven Rick Rumph intercepted a Bucks pass.
Causey had the better day between the Bucks quarterbacks, finishing seven of 14 for 79 yards and touchdowns. Gibbs went five of 13 for 64 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Hamlette gained 32 yards off seven carries to go along with his rushing touchdown. Clark, who played for the Storm early last season, grabbed six balls for 68 yards and three touchdowns, while Abraham had five catches for 60 yards and a score. LaTreze Mushatt led the Bucks defense with nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Lynn Williams also recovered a fumble.
The Bucks will host the defending IFL champion Iowa Barnstormers on April 8 at 12:05 p.m. pacific (2:05 p.m. central). It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Storm have a bye in week 8 before returning home to face the Barnstormers on April 20. Kickoff in that one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific (7:05 p.m. central). It will be the first meeting between these teams since Iowa defeated Sioux Falls 42-38 in last season's United Bowl.
