ANALYSIS
This could be a bit of a redemption game for the Strike Force, who found themselves down 56-28 at halftime two weeks ago to the Rattlers in Phoenix and fell to the Rattlers 91-58. On the positive side of the coin, it was San Diego's highest point total of the season. On the other side, the 91 points given up to Arizona was a franchise high for the Rattlers, who are in their 27th season of indoor/arena football. The Strike Force seemed to put some things together defensively last week, holding Cedar Rapids to 34 points to earn their first-ever franchise win. They were penalized just four times in the game and did not turn the ball over, but they'll have to score more than 40 points in order to attempt to counter the potent Rattlers offense. Arizona remained undefeated with last week's 55-41 win over the Tucson Sugar Skulls. The difference in that one came in in the third quarter as Arizona outscored Tucson 27-14 in the third quarter. This is the second of four meetings this season between these teams and the first of the series to be played in San Diego. It's also the third straight week the Rattlers will have played an IFL expansion team. They play the expansion Strike Force and Sugar Skulls four times each this season.
Arizona enters this one looking to complete an undefeated record through the first half of the regular season. Jeff Ziemba is completing 69.1 percent of his passes for 589 yards with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. It should be noted that those numbers include time he split with Verlon Reed, Jr. during the first four games of the season before Reed was lost for the year due to a leg injury. Ziemba also has rushed for 3.5 yards per carry and four touchdowns on the season. The Rattlers feature two, and likely three players out of the backfield. Jabre Lolley is rushing for 48.8 yards per game and is tied for second in the IFL with 12 touchdowns on the ground. He also has caught six passes this season; four o which going for scores. Darrell Monroe has appeared in one game in 2019, rushing for 64 yards with two trips to the end zone two weeks ago against the Strike Force. Jamal Miles, who also is used as a threat out of the backfield, is second on the team with 16 receptions for 183 yards and seven touchdowns, while Jarrod Harrington leads the team with 21 catches for 254 yards to go along with five touchdowns. Davonte Merriweather leads the Rattlers' defense with 47 tackles, three interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries. Ricky Whatt, Jr. has 41 tackles 3.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Phillip Henry has also picked off three passes for Arizona. Jimmy Camacho has made 50 of 55 extra point attempts and converted one of four field goal tries this season.
In just two weeks, the Strike Force have a different look on offense. Jidad Vercher seems to have taken over at QB for Derrick Bernard, who reportedly has signed with the CIF's Omaha Beef, though no formal announcement has been made. Vercher made his debut against Arizona two weeks ago and went seven of 11 for 89 yards and two scores. He has completed 19 of 30 passes this season for 203 yards with four touchdowns and a pick, and has rushed for a score. George Moreira, Jr. is the featured running back and has come on, especially the past couple of weeks. Moreira has rushed 57 times for 175 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. Marques Rodgers comes in with a league fourth-best 62.7 receiving yards per game. He has 33 catches for 439 yards and seen touchdowns. Julian Stafford is not too far behind with his 30 receptions for 406 yards and is third in the IFL with 10 touchdowns. Look for David Carter to also get some targets from Vercher in this one. Mikell Mair leads the team with 32 tackles, while Omar Cook has 25 tackles, nine pass break ups and the defense's only interception. Terrence Fullum has the Strike Force's only sack of the season. Ernesto Lacayo is 38 of 39 on extra point attempts with that lone miss coming last week against the River Kings. He's hit seven of 16 field goal tries with a long of 51 yards. He nailed field goals of 43 and 50 yards against the River Kings and was named IFL Special Teams Player of the Week.
