BREAKDOWN
One team is trying to get back into playoff contention, while the other is looking to stay in the top two in the standings. The Steamwheelers have dropped their last two games and sit in seventh place in the standings, a game back of the Tucson Sugar Skulls. Quad City needs a win over this perennial Storm team to stay within striking distance of the Sugar Skulls, whom they defeated once and with whom they still have a June meeting which could determine who reaches the post-season and who goes on vacation. The Barnstormers control their own destiny. They are a game back of top-seeded Arizona. Should Iowa win out, they would clinch one of the coveted top two spots in the playoffs. Those top spots equal a bye in the first round and a home date in the conference finals. This one could be viewed as a trap game against a powerful passing attack which should not be ignored. The Barnstormers defeated the Steamwheelers on March 3 in Moline, 53, 39, but over two months have passed so these teams may have a clear slate against one another. The Steamwheelers rank first in the IFL with 186.0 passing yards per game, while the Barnstormers are first in pass defense at 118.4 yards per game. Iowa also boasts the league's best defense, allowing just 202.0 yards and 32.6 points per game. Quad City QB E.J. Hilliard threw for 255 yards and five touchdowns in that March 3 contest, while Daquan Neal had 154 yards threw the air with five touchdown tosses. This is just the second overall meeting between the teams.
Hilliard is atop the IFL with 183.3 passing yards per game and 39 touchdowns. He comes in completing 59.7 percent of his throw and has tossed just one interception on the season. Hilliard also leads the team in rushing with 62 carries for 279 yards and seven touchdowns. Zavier Steward will make his fifth appearance in a Steamwheelers' uniform. He has 28 rushes for 90 yards and fie scores. Juwan Lewis could also get some carries out of the backfield. Quad City features perhaps the best one-two punch at receiver in the IFL. Keyvan Rudd and Quinton Pedroza are third and fourth in the league with 68.6 and 61.0 receiving yards, respectively. Pedroza had 40 catches for 549 yards with 19 touchdowns and Rudd has 32 receptions for 617 yards and 14 touchdowns. Carlos Wiggins, who also runs back kicks, will likely see some targets in the passing game. Danzel McDaniel's 74 tackles lead the league, and he adds 3.5 tackles for loss. La'Kel Bass has 57 tackles and an interception with three pass break ups. Robert Jones is second in the IFL with six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss. Thailand Pierce has an interception, and three active defenders have a sack each.Jacob Stytz has hit 33 of his 37 extra point attempts and three of nine field goal tries with a long of 41 yards.
Neal, second in the league at 172.3 passing yards per game, is also second with 32 touchdowns through the air. He is completing 70.9 percent of his throughs and has just a pair of interceptions. Neal also is fourth in the IFL with 4.3 rushing yards per game and third with 15 touchdowns on the ground. Jamal Tyler gets most of the carries out of the backfield and has rushed for eight touchdowns. Malik Brown compliments him with 5.6 yards per carry and two touchdowns. Ryan Balentine is one of the best in the business with his 75.3 receiving yards per game and 16 touchdown receptions. Connor Hollenbeck is a big target, such as the IFL version of a tight end and can be dangerous in the red zone. Jazeric Peterson, who has four touchdown grabs, has been featured in the offense as of late. With Jourdan Wickliffe on short term IR, Tryvon Williams is the active season leader in tackles with 52. He also has 2.5 sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss. Tyrell Pearson is tied for the IFL lead with six interceptions. Tevin Madison comes in with a pair of picks, and Desmond Raiford has two sacks and an interception. Travonte Valentine also has recorded two sacks this season. Nathan Criswell, who returned from transfer last week, is 28 of 36 on extra point attempts and is four of seven on field goal tried with a long of 32 yards.
