BREAKDOWN
The Bucks are hanging by a thread in the playoff picture. They need to win their last four games, and get some help from other teams around the league in terms of their losses. Mathematically possible, yes. Improbable, also yes. A couple wins in those last four games could end their first Indoor Football League season respectively. A win over the defending champions here would be their signature win over the season. The Barnstormers would love nothing more to win their final three, including this one and a June 8 match up against the Storm in Des Moines. The Storm are the only team to have beaten them this season (36-32 on April 20 in Sioux Falls) and should they win that second contest, they would own the tiebreaker. What is at stake is the number two position in the IFL standings at the end of the regular season. Assuming the Arizona Rattlers win their remaining four games, the Storm and Barnstormers would be in that position. The second seed earns a bye week in the first round and a home date in the semifinals. The number three seed would have no bye and face the sixth seed in the opening round. Iowa jumped out to a 34-3 halftime lead in the first match up between these teams on April 14 and never looked back as they posted a 55-16 win over the Bucks in Bismarck. Since then the Bucks have won a pair of games and are 2-2 in the last four. The Barnstormers have won four straight since their loss to the Storm with three of those wins coming by five points or less.
Bismarck has earned a bit of respectability over the past several weeks with wins over the Cedar Rapids River Kings and Quad City Steamwheelers. John Gibbs has taken the helm at quarterback after having split time early in the season with Homer Causey. Gibbs is completing 48.6 percent of his passes on the season for 829 yards with a dozen touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's dangerous in the rushing game with 54 carries for 257 yards (4.8 yards per carry) with 11 touchdowns. Preston Hamlette DiVonte Beale are the featured running backs. The Bucks have some talent at receiver with Frederick Abraham and Mike Tatum leading the charge. Abraham has 30 receptions for 331 yards and seven touchdowns, while Tatum though, has been released by the team in a puzzling move, A threat in the receiving, rushing and return games, he is the current IFL all-time leader with 7,929 all-purpose yards. Look for Alex Wheat, Jr. and Eric Lauderdale to pick up some of the slack through the air in this game. Lynn Williams has 35 tackles, seven pass break ups and two fumble recoveries to lead the Bismarck defense. Pal Dodson and Jammeron Johnson each have 34 tackles. LaTreze Mushatt has the only two sacks for the Bucks this season, as well as 8.5 tackles for loss. Brandon Henrie and Deion Carter have six and five pass break ups, respectively. Cody Barber, who will make his fifth appearance of the season for the Bucks, is 12 of 19 on his extra point attempts and five of 12 on field goal tries with a long of 45.
Iowa is on a roll and will likely use this as a tune-up game before going into a bye prior to their week 16 meeting against Sioux Falls. This is a different Bucks team than that which they defeated by 38 points last month. Daquan Neal's 183.7 passing yards per game and 42 touchdowns are second this season in the IFL to the Steamwheelers' E.J. Hilliard. Neal is completing 73 percent of his passes for 2,021 yards and has tossed just two interceptions. His 46.2 rushing yards per game is fourth in the league and he is tied for tops in the IFL with 21 touchdowns on the ground. Jamal Tyler and Malik Brown will likely get the bulk of the carries out of the backfield. Ryan Balentine is third all time in all-purpose yards with 6,912. He is first with 68.3 receiving yards per game and second with 20 touchdown catches. Connor Hollenbeck, a big target with excellent hands, comes in with 46 catches for 507 yards and nine touchdowns. Jazeric Peterson has 31 receptions for 445 yards and seven scores. Iowa possesses the IFL's best defense led by the 66 tackles and 2.5 sacks of Treyvon Williams, who also has 11 tackles for loss. Tyrell Pearson it tied for the league lead with six interceptions and has four pass break ups, and Cordero Hayes leads the team with seven pass break ups. Tevin Madison has two picks, and Jeremy Gloston and Jonah McCutcheon each have an interception. Nathan Criswell is 39 of 49 on his extra point attempts and four of eight on field goal tries with a long of 35 yards.
