BREAKDOWN
Week after week, the Strike Force seem poised for a win. They are coming off a bye, but played the Arizona Rattlers tough two weeks ago in an 84-63 loss in San Diego. With the playoffs in their first season out of reach, they are playing for pride. The schedule has not been kind to the Strike Force this season as nine of their 11 games have come against teams which are still in the playoff hunt. Facing the perennial success of the Storm is no exception to that and, one of San Diego's biggest road tests of the season. The Storm are in the driver's seat in a quest for a first round bye int he playoffs, as well as a home date in the semifinals. If they win their remaining three games, they accomplish just that. It would take a win in this game to begin that effort. They face the Iowa Barnstormers on June 8 but, if they win that game in Des Moines, they will own the tiebreaker and move into second place due to a tiebreaker over the Barnstormers. Sioux Falls would just have to close out their season with a win over Bismarck at home. The league is coming down to the home stretch of the season. While it would be a shock, a win over the Storm would be the signature win for San Diego in its inaugural season. A win for the Storm would put them in a position to earn that bye and home field advantage in the semis. San Diego has had its moments this season, and the Storm have had several close ones. This first-ever match up between the teams should be interesting.
The Strike Force have been competitive in the majority of their games this season. Unfortunately for them, they have run into the undefeated Rattlers three times, and have one more date with them in Phoenix in the regular season finale. Jihad Vercher has improved over the course of the season since taking over for the departed Derrick Bernard. Vercher is completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 750 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight picks. He also has rushed for a pair of scores. George Moreira, Jr. has appeared in all 11 of the Strike Force's games this season, rushing 72 times for 234 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also has 19 catches for 132 yards and four scores. Dominique Carson could also fit into the offensive mix for the Strike Force. Marques Rodgers, who was banged up a bit in the last game two weeks ago, is listed on the active roster. He is fifth in the league with 58.1 receiving yards per game and has caught eight touchdown passes on the season. Julian Stafford has 40 catches for 531 yards and a dozen touchdowns, while David Carter comes in with 25 receptions for 291 yards and three scores. Omar Clark leads the way for the Strike Force defense with 52 tackles and 12 pass break ups, and has an interception. Terrence Fullum has a sack and leads the team with five tackles for loss, while Sergio Phillips has recorded a sack. Ernesto Lacayo's 57 of 59 (97 percent) on extra point attempts leads the IFL, and he is nine of 21 on field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
The Storm, who won six straight United Bowls from 2011 to 2016, have not held the championship trophy the past two seasons. Veteran Lorenzo Brown, Jr. is looking to lead his team back to that form. Brown is completing 64.8 percent of his passes for a per-game average of 162.5 (third in the IFL yards with 36 touchdowns (also third) and just six interceptions. He also has rushed 113 times for 346 yards and 14 scores. Darrian Miller and Calen Campbell could take some heat off Brown in the rushing game. Campbell has 10 rushing touchdowns and Miller has four in eight and six games, respectively. Brandon Sheperd's 67.5 receiving yards per game are second in the league. He also if fifth in the IFL with 14 receiving touchdowns. Kent Shelby has emerged as of late as a solid big-play option with is 30 receptions for 397 yards and nine touchdowns. The Storm have utilized backup quarterback Tra'Von Chapman to round out the receiving group. T.J. Neal has 57 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss for the Storm defense. Claude Davis' 2.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss lead the team, and Charles Williams has a pair of sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. Tre Dickerson has a pair of interceptions and four pass break ups, and Rick Rumph leads the team with six pass break ups. With Miles Bergner being put on season ending IR last week, Parker Douglass is the kicker from here on out. He is 27 of 30 on extra point attempts and seven of 12 on field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
