BREAKDOWN
The math is pretty simple for the Sugar Skulls. Win this game and their season finale at home against the Quad City Steamwheelers and they secure the fifth seed in the playoffs. Even with a single loss, it's possible to earn a playoff berth in their expansion season, but they would need the Steamwheelers and the Nebraska Danger to lose one of their remaining games. If the Sugar Skulls end up in a three-way tie, which would include a loss to the Steamwheelers in week 17, they would be eliminated from the playoffs due to losing tiebreakers over both Quad City and Nebraska. A win in this game also would give them the notation of being the first team to defeat the Rattlers during the season. It's even easier for the Rattlers. Win this and their season finale over the San Diego Strike Force and they guarantee themselves the top spot. A loss in either game, and wins by the Iowa Barnstormers this week against the Sioux Falls Storm and next week against the Danger and the Barnstormers would be tied with the Rattlers at regular season's end with 13-1 records. Iowa would win the tiebreaker due to a stronger strength of schedule. Both the Rattlers and the Barnstormers' final two games are at home. This is the fourth of five meetings between the teams this season. Arizona outscored Tucson 28-7 in the second quarter, and 28-14 in the second half in the first meeting en route to a 63-28 win at Phoenix on March 16. The second two games, both played at Tucson, were considerably closer. Jeff Ziemba tossed four touchdowns, two each to Jarrod Harrington and Jamal Miles as the Rattlers took the second game, 55-41, on April 14. Tucson's Jake Medlock threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three more in the effort. Drew Powell threw for five touchdowns and rushed for a pair of scores to lead the Rattlers to a 62-47 win on May 27. Medlock tossed five touchdown passes for the Sugar Skulls in that one. Rattlers' head coach Kevin Guy is also one of the majority owners of the Sugar Skulls.
Tucson has two playoff-caliber quarterbacks and they've utilized both this season. Medlock has gotten the start in the past several games and will get the call in this one. He is completing 62.9 percent of his passes for 1,324 yards with 31 touchdowns and five interceptions. The former Cedar Rapids Titan also has rushed for 208 yards and 11 scores. That aside, the team also has former Green Bay Blizzard signal caller Matt Behrendt, who is completing 66.3 percent of his throws with 17 touchdowns, and boasts a 5.0 yards per carry rushing average. Mike Jones' 55.4 rushing yards per game ranks second in the IFL (first among running backs) and is fourth with 17 touchdowns. He also is third on the team with 288 receiving yards and four touchdown catches. Shaquon Curenton leads the team with 36 receptions for 482 yards, while Rico Brown has 31 grabs for 345 yards. Each has caught 13 touchdown passes. Jeremiah Harris, who will appear in his fifth game for the Sugar Skulls, has 17 catches for 173 yards and five touchdowns. Harris is now also the primary kick returner for Tucson. Zach Allen anchors the defense with his 75 tackles, four sacks, nine tackles for loss and three pass break ups and an interception. Keith Jones, Jr. has three sacks to go along with his seven tackles for loss. Cam Gaddis enters this one with a team-leading three interceptions, while Dee Maggitt, Jr. has a pair of picks. Micah Eugene, Jr. adds 66 tackles, seven pass break ups and an interception to the defensive effort. Josh Gable, signed mid-season, is 36 of 42 on extra point attempts and six of 14 on field goal tries with a long of 45 yards with the team.
Powell, who will be making his fourth start for the Rattlers, is looking to win his second straight United Bowl. He led the Iowa Barnstormers to last season's IFL title and was signed by Arizona in late April after a stint in the Arena Football League. He is completing 77.1 percent of his passes for 124.5 yards per game with a dozen touchdowns and just one interception. While he does not officially qualify for the league's leader board (75 percent of his team's games played), his 72.0 rushing yards top the league, and he has rushed for 11 touchdowns in just three-and-a-half games. Jabre Lolley and Roland Genesy, Jr. are likely to be the backs out of the backfield with 51.9 and 59.3 rushing yards per game, respectively. Lolley has scored 14 touchdowns and Genesy has seven. Harrington comes in with 53.8 receiving yards per game and 14 touchdowns. Jamal Miles is tied for fourth in the league with 15 touchdowns through the air. Davontae Merriweather's 90 tackles leads the IFL, and he has four interceptions, nine pass break ups and a sack. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. leads the team with six sacks and 13 tackles for loss, but is lost for the season to injury. Veteran Allen Chapman is tied for the league lead with six picks and has 12 pass break ups. Nikolaus D'Avanzo comes in with 5.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, and Chris McAllister has 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Dillon Winfrey and Phillip Henry have five and four interceptions, respectively. Jimmy Camacho is one of the more accurate kickers in the league and his second with a 90 percent conversation rate on extra point attempts while being five of 10 on field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.
