CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - For the first time in seven seasons, the Green Bay Blizzard will not only make an Indoor Football League playoffs appearance, but will also host a first round playoff game.
The Blizzard 42 of the game's first 48 points as they routed the Cedar Rapids River Kings tonight at U.S. Cellular Center, 56-15. Green Bay will host one of three teams in the first round on Friday, June 21. The time and date is yet to be determined. Their opponent will be one of three teams battling for one of the remaining two playoff spots. The Nebraska Danger, Quad City Steamwheelers and Tucson Sugar Skulls will determine their playoff fates in next week's regular season finale of games. SCtoC will update the playoff scenarios in our game previews of each of next week's games.
Green Bay's last playoff appearance came in 2012 when they beat the Bloomington Edge at home, 51-30, before falling to the eventual champion Sioux Falls Storm, 61-42, in the conference championship in South Dakota. It was the third straight year they had made the post season. The Blizzard are 8-5 after finishing last season at 2-12.
This was the first of two straight games between the Blizzard and the River Kings, which fell to 1-12 with the loss.
The Blizzard got on the board first on a two-yard run from Anthony Philyaw. The River Kings came right back with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Oliver to Drake White. James Kazalski's kick was blocked and returned by Silverberry Mouhon of the Blizzard 48 yards for a defensive two-point conversion and the Blizzard were up 9-6 with 8:08 left in the opening quarter. They added to that when Philyaw rushed in from seven yards out. Green Bay led 15-6 at the end of the first.
Philyaw added a pair of touchdown runs in the second quarter of four and one yards to put the Blizzard up 28-6 with 3:04 remaining in the quarter. They extended the lead two minutes later on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Lenorris Footman to Keshaun Taylor. Green Bay led 35-6 at the intermission.
On Green Bay's opening possession of the second half from its own one yard line, Footman found his way 49 yards for a touchdown. It is the longest rushing touchdown of the season in the IFL. Cedar Rapids tof back on the board courtesy of a 28-yard field goal from Kazalski. Footman's 11-yard touchdown strike to Kezlow Smith gave the Blizzard a 49-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
The River Kings made the score 49-15 on a one-yard run from Jordan Smith with 10 minutes to go before Footman hit Smith for a 37-yard touchdown to account for the final tally of 56-15.
Green Bay more than doubled the total offense of Cedar Rapids, 306 yards to 145. The Blizzard had advantages of 116 yards in the rushing game and 45 yards in the passing game. Green Bay was penalized 10 times for 55 yards and Cedar Rapids was flagged six times for 41 yards.
Footman completed 10 of 13 passes for 166 yards with three touchdowns, and rushed just twice for 52 yards and a score. Philyaw, appearing in just his second game with the Blizzard, gained 88 yards on 16 carries with four visits to the end zone. Smith finished with four catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns, while Taylor had four grabs for 69 yards and a score. Ameris Bailey led the Blizzard with 10 tackles, while Teko Powell and Darren Lake each recorded a sack. Joe Powell added an interception to the defensive effort.
Oliver, making his second start for the River Kings, went 14 of 30 for 128 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Nathanial Chavious caught four passes for 50 yards, and White had four grabs for 37 yards and a score. Nick Brassell tallied four solo tackles, while Lewis Na'Shawn and Samual Mabany each had five total tackles for the Cedar Rapids defense.
The teams will meet in next week's season finale; this time at the Resch Center at Green Bay. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. pacific standard time.
