BREAKDOWN
One is still looking for a playoff berth and the other has already clinched one. Both still have something for which to play. If the Danger win they're in. They also can earn a playoff bid if the Quad City Steamwheelers can march into Arizona and come away with a win over the Sugar Skulls. If the Danger win and the Sugar Skulls win, Nebraska is out. The Tucson-Quad City match up will start an hour later than this one, so the Danger will not have any advanced notice of the outcome of the other game. Toppling the Barnstormers will be no easy task, but they teams have developed a rivalry over the past few seasons due to their relatively close proximity to one another, and rivalry games can often be difficult to predict. The Barnstormers, at 12-1 have already clinched a bye and home field advantage in the playoff semifinal. They're playing for the potential first seed in the playoffs which would mean hosting the United Bowl should they advance. They would need to win this game and hope for a San Diego Strike Force upset of the 13-0 Arizona Rattlers at Phoenix. Both games take place simultaneously. The previous game this season between these teams came down to a 42-yard touchdown from Daquan Neal to Connor Hollenbeck with 18 seconds left as the Barnstormers rallied to a 58-55 win at Grand Island in week 5. Neal tossed four touchdowns and ran for three more for Iowa, and Davonte Sapp-Lynch rushed for four scores to lead Nebraska in that one. The Barnstormers hold a slight edge of 5-4 in the season series, which includes a 59-23 win over the Danger in the 2018 playoffs.
The Danger have plenty of firepower, led by quarterback Tommy Armstrong, Jr. The former Nebraska Cornhusker is fifth in the league (among qualifiers) with 127.5 passing yards and fourth with 35 touchdowns per game. His 53.0 rushing yards is good for third in the IFL and he leads the league with 25 rushing scores. The Danger are second in the league with 105.5 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns. Sapp-Lynch's 41.9 yards per game is fifth in the IFL and he is third with 20 touchdowns on the ground. Sapp-Lynch also has 23 catches for 185 yards and a touchdown. Eric Thomas leads the receiving group with 39 receptions for 437 yards. Gregory Dent, Jr. has 35 catches for 396 yards. Thomas and Dent have each caught 11 touchdown tosses from Armstrong. Quincy Walden and recently signed Mike Tatum, the IFL's all-time all-purpose yards leader with 7,947, could also see some action in the passing game. Chris Martin leads the IFL with 8.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss to go along with 44 tackles. Lavarious Varnado, who also has 44 tackles, also has intercepted a pair of balls and has four pass break ups. D'Vonn Brown has tallied 4.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, and Sayvon Lowry has 3.5 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Brandon Roe leads the team with five interceptions. Coutel Jenkins has 5.5 tackles for loss in seven games with the team. Diego Marquez has made 27 of 51 extra point attempts and his six of 13 on field goal tries with a long of 51 yards with the Danger.
Neal has become one of the best in the IFL. He's second in the IFL with 191.2 passing yards per game and is first with 55 scoring strikes. He also ranks fourth with 46.8 rushing yards per game and is right behind Armstrong with 23 trips to the end zone. Jamal Tyler, who rested last game, may or may not see action in this one. He has 42 carries for 212 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. Malik Brown, who has three rushing scores on the season. may see some action in this one out of the backfield. Ryan Balentine leads the IFL with 77.8 receiving yards and 27 receiving touchdowns. per game He is third on the IFL all-time all-purpose yards list with 7,186. Connor Hollenbeck is a big target who has 53 catches for 596 yards with 12 touchdowns, and Jazeric Peterson comes in with 38 receptions for 537 yards and 10 scores.
