BREAKDOWN
The Strike Force are playing for pride and, despite their 1-12 mark, they've shown competitiveness at several instances this season. They've struggled to put together a complete game. A win over the Rattlers would be the signature victory of their inaugural season, but that won't be easy. At this point, San Diego head coach Burt Grossman and his coaching staff are evaluating players for next season. The franchise got off to a late start with the franchise announcement coming more than two months after the start of the Indoor Football League's free agency period and are looking forward to a full off season to put together its roster for 2020. The Rattlers nearly had their perfect season thwarted in a thrilling 50-49 overtime win at home over the Tucson Sugar Skulls last week. They were able to pull it out on quarterback Drew Powell's two-point conversion run in the second portion of the first overtime. Arizona, which has already clinched a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. A win over the Strike Force would clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs, including the United Bowl should they advance. A loss, and an Iowa Barnstormers win over the Nebraska Danger would give them the second seed. The games will take place simultaneously. The Rattlers will host a quarterfinal playoff game on June 28 at Gila River Arena in nearby Glendale due to renovations at their home venue, Talking Stick Resort Arena. This is the fourth meeting between the teams this season. The Rattlers scored an all-time franchise high in points in the first meeting, a 91-58 win in on April 6 at Phoenix. Roland Genesy, Jr. rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns in the Rattlers' 52-14 win two weeks later at San Diego. The third meeting was the most competitive with the Strike Force down my just a pair of touchdowns late in the fourth quarter until Jabre Lolley scored for Arizona to give the Rattlers an 84-63 win on May 19 at San Diego. Powell threw for four touchdowns and rushed for five in Arizona's win.
Jihad Vercher will make his eighth start of the season for San Diego after taking over for Derrick Bernard. Vercher is a tough quarterback who can hurt defenses with his arm and his legs. He is completing 56.2 percent of his passes for 1,002 yards (111.3 per game) with 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He's also rushed 64 times for 155 yards and three scores. He'll get some help in the backfield by way of Dominique Carson, who gets the start in place of the injured George Moreira, Jr. Carson gained 44 yards and scored in the Strike Force's loss last week to the Danger. Marques Rodgers, whose 2,161 all-purpose yards leads the IFL, is fifth in the league in receiving at 57.3 yards per game with eight touchdown catches. He is a threat as a kick returner and also has rushed for six touchdowns this season. Julian Stafford is a big play threat who comes in with 44 receptions for 58 yards and a team-high 13 touchdowns. David Carter and Victor Dean, Jr., who have each caught three touchdown throws, are also threats in the passing game. Omar Cook leads the team with 62 tackles, 12 pass break ups and an interception. Terrence Fullum has recorded two of the team's three sacks this season and leads the team with six tackles for loss and two blocked kicks. Ralph Harvey, Jr. has forced and recovered a pair of fumbles to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss. Ernesto Lacayo is the league's most accurate kicker when it comes to extra points, hitting 60 of 63 (95.2 percent). He is nine of 24 on field goal tries with a long of 53 yards.
Powell, who led the Iowa Barnstormers to the United Bowl championship last season, will make his fifth start for the Rattlers after being picked up mid-season. He's completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 131.2 yards per game with 16 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Powell posts 63.4 rushing yards per game with 11 touchdowns, and an impressive 7.9 yards per carry. Genesy is rushing for 59.3 yards per game with seven trips to the end zone in three games, while Lolley racks up 49.1 yards per game and leads the team with 14 touchdowns on the ground. Jarrod Harrington, the IFL's reigning Special Teams Player of the Week, is the team's leading receiver with 50 catches for 645 yards with 14 touchdowns. Jamal Miles, who may also see time as a rusher, enters this game with 39 grabs for 470 yards and a team-high 15 touchdowns. Veteran Anthony Amos and Dez Stewart round out the group with three and two touchdown receptions, respectively. Davontae Merriweather's 98 tackles lead the league. He also has four interceptions, 11 pass break ups and a sack. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. is tied for second in the league with six sacks and has 13.5 tackles for loss and Nikolaus D'Avanzo is tied for fourth with 5.5 sacks to go along with 14 tackles for loss. Allen Chapman is tied for the league lead in interceptions with six and has 13 pass break ups, while Dillon Winfrey adds five picks. Jimmy Camacho has appeared in all 13 games for the Rattlers, going 99 of 110 on his extra point attempts and five of 11 on field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.
