SIOUX FALLS, SD - It was a valiant effort, but it was not to be.
The Sioux Falls Storm held off a pesky Bismarck Bucks team en route to a 65-54 win tonight at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. The Storm, who had qualified for the Indoor Football League playoffs four weeks ago, pushed back the Bucks and moved to 11-3. The third seed Storm will host the sixth seed and expansion Tucson Sugar Skulls in a first round playoff game on June 23. The Storm have appeared in the last nine United Bowls, winning six straight from 2011 to 2016. The playoff match up, which has a start tome of 1:05 p.m. pacific standard time, will be the first-ever meeting between the Storm and the Sugar Skulls.
The Bucks fought a valiant battle in this one, but fell short in their effort to pick up their third win of the season. Bismarck finishes the season at 2-12 with their two wins coming over the Cedar Rapids River Kings and the Quad City Steamwheelers; both whom have missed the playoffs.
Sioux Falls hit the scoreboard first on a three-yard run from Nolan Saraceni, but Bismarck answered quickly on Tasleem Wilson's 47-yard bomb to Eric Lauderdale in the left side of the end zone. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. hit Damian Ford for a nine-yard touchdown late in the opening quarter. The Storm led 14-7 at the end of one.
Brown found Kent Shelby for a 16-yard score on the first play of the second quarter to give the Storm a 21-7 lead. Wilson's touchdown toss to Frederick Abraham, and then Wilson's one-yard run pulled the Bucks to within a point with 6:16 to go in the second. The Storm then blew in. Brown hit Brandon Sheperd for a nine-yard score, and Saraceni rushed in from five yards and Sioux Falls was up 35-20 at the break.
After the Bucks' defense held on the Storm's opening drive of the second half, Wilson hit Lauderdale for a 15-yard touchdown. Brown and the Storm responded on the next offensive play, scoring on a 31-yard pass from Brown to Ford. Frederick Abraham's two-yard run with 3:32 left in the quarter was countered buy a three-yard run from Saraceni. The Bucks continued to show fight, scoring on a 45-yard bomb from Wilson to William Gibbs with 10 seconds remaining in the third. The Storm led 49-40 going into the final quarter.
Parker Douglass' 22 yard field goal gave the Storm a 12-point lead with 11:44 to go in the game. They added to that when Brown rushed in from two yards. However, the Bucks' Abraham ran back the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. The Bucks attempted an onside kick, but were not successful and Brown rushed in for a one-yard touchdown. The Bucks scored on a 50-yard kickoff return by William Gibbs, along with a successful two-point conversion, to account for the final tally.
Sioux Falls amassed 316 yards of total offense to 253 for Bismarck. The Storm had an advantage of 78 yards in the rushing game, while the Bucks bested them in the passing game by 15 yards. Bismarck was penalized nine times for 57 yards while Sioux Falls was flagged five times for 50 yards.
Brown finished 12 of 16 for 179 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed seven times for 28 yards with a pair of scores. Saraceni had his best game of the season, gaining 75 yards off 14 carries with three touchdowns. Sheperd caught four passes for 71 yards and a score. Ford had three catches for 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Shelby added four grabs for 41 yards with a scoring catch. Tre Dickerson and Rick Rumph each had six solo tackles to lead the Sioux Falls defense Rumph, Lorenzo White, Jr. and Trey Wafford each recorded interceptions.
