This is the 2019-20 regular season schedule for the Portland Winterhawks.
The Portland Winterhawks play in the U.S. Division of the WHL's Western Conference. The U.S. Division features the five teams from the United States and consists of the Everett Silvertips, Seattle Thunderbirds, Spokane Chiefs, and Tri-City Americans. The Winterhawks split playing their home games between Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Moda Center at the Rose Quarter.
The 2019-20 Season is the second season in which the WHL will play a 68-game season schedule, with 34 home and 34 away games.
One of the biggest changes will be the relocation of the Kootenay ICE, who move to Winnipeg, MB after 21 seasons in Cranbrook, BC. The ICE are the first franchise to relocate since 2011, when the Chilliwack Bruins moved to Victoria, BC to become the Victoria Royals.
The Winterhawks look to get back to the playoffs after being eliminated by the Spokane in last year's Western Conference Quarter-Final, losing 4 games to 1. Portland begins the season at home against the Tri-City Americans, on Saturday, September 21, with the venue between Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum still to be determined.
Portland opens its 2019 season with a pair of home games against Tri-City and Kamloops, but then heads out on a seven-game Canadian road trip. The Winterhawks feature a four-game stint in early December in which they match up with Prince George; the first two are away with the final two being at home. The second half of the schedule is heavily loaded with United States opponents, such as regional rivals Spokane and Seattle. The Winterhawks close out their season with an away-and-home against Seattle.
The most home games the Winterhawks play in a month comes with the eight during November. The most away games in a month comes with seven in October. In all, including the three games in late September, they have more home games than away games in three of seven months of the season. They are on the road more than at home in the aforementioned month of October. They schedule is balanced in the remaining three months of December, January and February.
Fan favorite games will make their return this season, such as the annual Les Schwab Teddy Bear Toss Game. The annual New Year's Eve game will take place Tuesday, December 31 against Seattle.
