BREAKDOWN
The last time these teams met in the playoffs was two years ago in this round. It wasn't much of a contest as the Rattlers emerged with a 62-36 win to advance to the United Bowl in their first season since jumping ship to the Indoor Football League from the Arena Football League. From there, they went on to defeat the Sioux Falls Storm, 50-41 to win their first IFL championship and the sixth title in team history. Including that playoff win two seasons ago, the Rattlers have won all six previous meetings between the teams, including their only match up this season. The Danger scored a late fourth quarter touchdown to post a first round 45-40 win over the Green Bay Blizzard. The Rattlers are looking to become the first IFL team since the 2015 Sioux Falls Storm to finish a season undefeated with a United Bowl championship. The Danger are coached by Pig Brown, who was elevated from his position as co-interim head coach (with former Spokane Empire and Tri-Cities Fever head man Adam Shackleford) right before last year's United Bowl; the same week he was inducted into the IFL Hall of Fame as a player. Kevin Guy is in his 11th season as head coach of the Rattlers and has compiled a 37-7 IFL record, and is 141-41 overall with the team in both leagues.
In the teams' only meeting this season, the Danger were within three points at 49-46 with just over two minutes remaining, but a 15-yard pass from Drew Powell to Jamal Miles effectively put the game out of reach and gave the Rattlers a 56-46 win at home. Powell threw for two touchdowns and rushed for three more in the win for Arizona, while Tommy Armstrong, Jr. threw for three touchdowns and ran for two others in the loss for Nebraska. The Danger were fifth in the IFL in scoring during the regular season at 51.4 points per game, and were seventh with 230.2 yards per game of total offense. The Danger's defense finished fifth with 46.8 points allowed and sixth with 238.5 yards allowed. The Rattlers finished first during the regular season in total offense at 276 yards per game, and were also first with 62.8 points per game. The Rattlers allowed a league-best 36.4 points per game and were second to the Blizzard in yards allowed at 219.4 per game.
The Danger have quite a bit of talent on offense, though it has been a bit inconsistent at times during the season. Armstrong. who holds several major passing records for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers has been solid all season. Armstrong passed for 128.5 yards per game and his 37 touchdown tosses rank fourth in the IFL. He completed 59.8 percent of his passes and threw nine picks. He is a threat rushing the ball with 51.4 yards per game and led the league in touchdowns on the ground with 26. Davonte Sapp-Lynch, Marshawn's kid brother enjoyed a strong rookie season, gaining 541 yards off 111 carries and was third in the league with 22 trips to the end zone. Sapp-Lynch was also a threat out of the backfield with 26 catches for 222 yards and a score. Eric Thomas led all Danger receivers with 40 receptions for 449 yards. Dent caught 36 throws for 408 yards. Thomas and Dent each had 11 touchdown grabs. Quincy Walden, with 15 receptions for 211 yards and five touchdowns, is also utilized sometimes as a rusher. Mike Tatum, the IFL all-time leader in all-purpose yards, was signed late in the season and should see some targets.
Roe led a balanced defensive attack with six interceptions to go along with 45 tackles. Chris Martin was a terror to opposing quarterbacks, tallying a league-high 8.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. He also had 44 tackles and three pass break ups. Lavarious Varnado also also had 44 tackles to go along with a pair of interceptions and four pass break ups. D'Vonn Brown came on late in the season for the Nebraska defense with 4.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries and three pass break ups. Seyvon Lowry comes in with 4.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. Thomas, Walden, Dent and Tatum are all excellent options as kick returners with Thomas' 21.9 average and three overall return touchdowns leading the group. Dent also returned a kickoff back for a touchdown. Mid-season signee Diego Marquez made 32 of 36 extra point attempts with the team. He also hit on seven of 16 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards for the Danger.
Powell, who took over the reigns as the Rattlers' quarterback with five games remaining during the season, completed 73.8 percent of his passes for 807 yards with 18 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. He was even more impressive on the ground with 46 rushes for 328 yards and 13 touchdowns. Arizona's previous starter, Jeff Ziemba remains on the roster. Out of the backfield, the team will rely on Jabre Lolley with his 49.1 rushing yards per game and 14 touchdowns in nine appearances. He also has caught six touchdown passes this season. Roland Genesy, Jr. would be the compliment to Lolley on the ground. Wide receiver Jamal Miles may also see some carries out of the backfield. Miles, who rushed for seven touchdowns this season, caught 41 passes for 496 yards and a team-high 16 touchdowns. Jarrod Harrington led the Rattlers in receiving with his 54 catches for 696 yards to go along with 14 touchdown receptions. Veteran Rattler Anthony Amos finished the regular season with 15 catches for 254 yards and five touchdowns in four games with the team this season. Donta Armstrong and Dillon Winfrey are the other wide receivers on the Rattlers playoff roster.
Davontae Merriweather was a one-man wrecking crew for the Rattlers' defense, tallying 103 tackles led the IFL this season. He added four interceptions, 12 pass break ups, three tackles for loss, a sack and three fumble recoveries. Nikolaus D'Avanzo comes in with 5.5 sacks and a team-high 14 tackles for loss. Chris McAllister adds 3.5 sacks and Lance McDowdell had three. Each also recorded seven tackles for loss. McDowdell also blocked four kicks. Allen Chapman led the team and is tied for the league lead with six interceptions to go along with 13 pass break ups. Winfrey, who is used more as a defender, intercepted five passes and had eight pass break ups. Connor Flagel registered a pair of sacks and was third on the team with eight tackles for loss. Arizona uses a return by committee approach, so it's possible Harrington or Miles could return kicks in this one. Harrington returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns and Miles had one kickoff return touchdown. Jimmy Camacho has been the Rattlers' kicker all season. He has made 106 of 117 of his extra point attempts and five of 11 of his field goal tries with a long of 43 yards.
