CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Quarterback E.J. Hilliard ran for three scores and threw for another as the Quad City Steamwheelers opened the 2020 Indoor football League season on a winning note.
Utilizing some excellent play in all three aspects of the game, the Steamwheelers jumped out to a 40-13 halftime lead and never looked back as they downed the Cedar Rapids River Kings tonight, 54-39, at U.S. Cellular Center. The contest was the season opener for the IFL, which is embarking on it's 12th season, making it the longest continuous indoor/arena football league in existence.
Quad City moved to 1-0 with the win, and the River Kings fell to 0-1.
The Steamwheelers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Keyvan Rudd returned the opening kickoff 40 yards for the touchdown. After a failed extra point by Jacob Stytz, Quad City got the ball back and converted on a one-yard touchdown run from Hilliard. Stytze hit the point after and Quad City was up 13-0 just seven minutes into the game. Cedar Rapids got on the board on the ensuing kickoff, which was returned 55 yards for the touchdown by Chris Franklin. The Steamwheelers struck back as wide receiver Quinton Pedroza scored on a one-yard run to cap an six-play, 29-yard drive. The Steamwheelers led 19-7 at the end of the opening quarter.
The River Kings pulled to within a score early in the second quarter on quarterback Derrick Bernard's 21-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed. The Steamwheelers went on a run, scoring 21 straight points in the final 12 minutes of the first half. Firs, Hilliard hit Rudd for a 34-yard touchdown, then the former scored on runs of one and 10 yards to put Quad City up by 27 at intermission.
Cedar Rapids cut into the deficit on Bernard's 17-yard scoring strike to former Tucson Sugar Skull Shaquon Curenton. Bernard's run for the two-point conversion made the score 40-21 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the third. Marcus Bagley's three-yard touchdown run, along with the Stytz extra point, put the Steamwheelers in the driver's seat with 3:48 left in the quarter.
The River Kings came alive in the final stanza with Bones Bagaunte's two-yard pass from Bernard. Quad City scored on a one-yard run from Tre Harvey before the River Kings scored on Elijah Johnson's 16-yard touchdown pass from Jalvin Kilgo. Cedar Rapids scored again, with 32 seconds remaining, when Diantae Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Quad City held an edge in passing, 134 yards to 91, and in rushing, 75 yards to 57. Each team committed one turnover, and each team was penalized si times; for 23 yards on the Steamwheelers and for 24 yards for the River Kings.
Hilliard completed eight of 12 passes for 125 yards to go along with a touchdown, and rushed nine times for 47 yards and three scores. Harvey and Rudd each caught a pair of passes for Quad City, for 56 and 50 yards, respectively. Droell Greene led the Steamwheelers with five tackles. Shaun Hill recorded 1.5 sacks and Kiante Goudeau intercepted a pass for the defense.
Bernard, who last played in the IFL last season for the San Diego Strike Force, finished nine of 23 for 72 yards with two touchdowns and a pick, He also led the team with 42 yards off seven rushes with a touchdown. Curenton caught three balls for 30 yards and Johnson had two receptions foer 29 yards. Each receiver caught a touchdown pass. Trevor Pugh's seven tackles paced the River Kings' defense, and Walter Walker had a sack.
The River Kings are back in action on March 14 when they visit the San Diego Strike force with a 6 p.m. kickoff. The Steamwheelers have a bye in week 2. They will host the Arizona Rattlers on March 21 at 5 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
